What is Algebra 2?

Algebra 2 is a math course that is a more advanced version of algebra 1 and is taken after the completion of algebra 1 and pre-algebra. Algebra 2 concepts are also used in a wide range of real-life applications in many fields, including engineering, economics, statistics, and more. You’ll learn the following topics in algebra 2:

Complex numbers

In complex numbers, students will learn how to perform arithmetic operations on complex numbers, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, how to simplify expressions involving complex numbers, how to use complex numbers to solve quadratic equations, quadratic functions, linear equations, basics of logarithmic equations, absolute value equations, and other polynomial equations, including those with complex roots, and also learn about the geometric properties of complex numbers, including their modulus, argument, and polar form. They will also learn how to graph complex numbers on a complex plane, which is similar to a Cartesian plane but with real and imaginary axes representing the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively.

With these skills, students should be able to solve math problems based on arithmetic operations on complex numbers, graph complex numbers on a complex plane, use complex numbers to solve polynomial equations, absolute value equations, and understand the geometric properties of complex numbers, which will enable them to represent complex numbers in different ways and to understand the relationships between complex numbers and other mathematical complex concepts, such as vectors and trigonometry.

Exponential models

In exponential models, students will learn how to graph exponential functions and interpret the key features of their graphs, such as the domain, range, intercepts, and end behavior. They will also learn about the properties of exponential and logarithmic functions, such as their derivatives, integrals, and limits, and earn about logarithmic functions, which are the inverse of exponential functions, and how to use them to solve quadratic equations and to convert between exponential and logarithmic forms. These topics will help you with good test preparation and also help you in preparing for standardized tests.

After all this knowledge, they will be able to graph exponential functions, use logarithmic functions to solve absolute value equations, quadratic equations, rational expressions, logarithmic equations, understand the key properties of these functions, and model real-world problems using exponential functions, such as problems involving population growth, radioactive decay, and compound interest which will help you in your test preparation and also prepare you for standardized tests, like SAT math.

Polynomial arithmetic

In polynomial arithmetic, students learn how to use various methods, such as the distributive property and long division, to perform these operations on polynomials of different degrees and with different numbers of terms, how to factor polynomials, which involves rewriting them as products of simpler polynomials, and how to use factoring to find the zeros, or roots, of polynomials. They will also learn about the properties of polynomials, such as their degree, leading coefficient, and constant term.

After gaining this knowledge, they will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials, factor polynomials, and use these skills to solve equations, such as absolute value equations, and find the zeros of polynomials.

Rational exponents & radicals

In rational exponents & radicals, students learn how to simplify expressions, like rational expressions, exponential functions, how to convert between these two forms of notation, how to perform operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, on expressions with fractional exponents and radicals. They will also learn about the properties of exponents and radicals, such as the product, power, and quotient rules, which will enable them to manipulate and simplify these expressions more efficiently.

After gaining this knowledge, they will be able to simplify and manipulate expressions with rational exponents and radicals, solve math problems based on quadratic equations, quadratic functions, and inequalities involving these expressions, and use them to model real-world situations, such as compound interest and exponential growth.

Transformations of functions

In transformations of functions, students learn how to transform the graphs of basic functions, such as linear functions, linear equations, quadratic functions, and exponential functions, through a series of translations, reflections, and compressions. They will learn how to use these transformations to graph various types of functions, including piecewise-defined functions and inverse functions, how to identify and describe the effects of each transformation on the shape, location, and scale of the original graph, how to use this knowledge to sketch and interpret graphs of more complex functions, how to analyze and compare graphs of functions that differ only by a transformation, and how to use these comparisons to make predictions about the behavior of the functions.

In the end, they will be able to graph and describe the transformations of a variety of functions, analyze and compare graphs of functions that differ only by a transformation, and use their understanding of transformations to make predictions about the behavior of functions. This will help you in preparing for standardized tests, like SAT math.

Logarithms

In logarithms, students learn about the properties of logarithms, including the product, quotient, and power rules, and how to use these properties to rewrite expressions in different forms. They will also learn how to graph logarithmic functions or logarithmic equations, and how to identify and describe the behavior of these functions, including their domain, range, asymptotes, and intercepts.

With these skills, students will be able to solve math problems based on absolute value equations and exponential equations using logarithmic functions, simplify complex or rational expressions using logarithmic properties or logarithmic equations, graph and analyze logarithmic functions, and apply logarithmic functions to real-world problems, such as population growth, radioactive decay, and sound intensity.

Polynomial division & factorization

In polynomial division & factorization, students learn how to divide polynomials using long division, how to factor polynomials using techniques such as the GCF, grouping, and factoring by grouping, how to graph polynomial functions using their roots and end behavior, and how to analyze the behavior of these functions based on their degree and leading coefficient. They will also learn about the properties of polynomial functions, including their roots, zeros, factors, and degree.

With these skills, students should be able students will be able to divide polynomials using various methods, factor polynomials using various techniques, and graph and analyze polynomial functions.

" My daughter never attempted the questions based on polynomials in her exams because she wasn't clear with the concepts due to which she was not able to do homework problems, use the quadratic formula, and finish her assignments properly. But her algebra 2 math tutor, Shivika, from Wiingy made her understand the usage of the quadratic formula and other concepts and also taught her easy ways to solve the problems fast using visual aids, like an interactive whiteboard and fun videos. Her tutor also gave her additional practice problems which also helped her to understand the concept. Now, my daughter is able to solve all the problems based on polynomials, linear equations, and absolute value equations, which is improving her performance and grades. "
