NAPLAN Numeracy

NAPLAN Numeracy is one of the four domains tested in the NAPLAN Test.

The NAPLAN numeracy tests measure the achievement of students in numeracy, including mathematical knowledge, skills, and understanding as outlined in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.

The numeracy tests assess the proficiency strands of understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning across the 3 content strands of mathematics: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.

Year 7 and 9 numeracy tests have 2 sections. There is a short non-calculator section, in which students are required to demonstrate arithmetical calculation skills. For the remainder of the test, calculators are permitted. However, Year 3 and 5 have only one section.

NAPLAN Numeracy is scheduled last in the NAPLAN exam. The format and duration of the Numeracy test are as below:

How Is the NAPLAN Numeracy Test Marked?

NAPLAN is a tailored test. The responses of the students are electronically recorded and then scanned once they respond to multiple-choice questions. A professional and impartial panel of trained examiners will mark the numeracy assessment and all other submissions.

Students’ response is marked by assessors who have received intensive training in marking the NAPLAN exam. Each state and territory’s test administration bodies are in charge of marking the exams that fall within their purview. The same training, quality assurance procedures, and grading criteria are applied to all markers throughout Australia.

NAPLAN Bands

Each NAPLAN scale is divided into 10 bands used to report student progress through Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. A national minimum standard is being provided and assigned to students on the assessment scale for each year level based on their performance. The chart of the assessment is given below:

Year 3:
