About your english tutor
My name is Andy Raven. My PhD in English Literature focused on material texts of the romantic, and literary theory. I was supervised by Professor Sally Bushell, and mentored by Terry Eagleton. I am open to degree level students keen to explore any aspect of literary and cultural theory, particularly those with an interest in textual theory. My period special is British romanticism, from 1780s to the 1820s. If you want to talk poetic form, if you need help approaching your next essay, if you just need to know what an earth Shakespeare is on about, get in touch. I have spent over ten years teaching undergraduates from all over the world. And my research has been published in journals like The Oxford Review of English Studies, The Wordsworth Circle, and the Keats Shelley Review.

English classes overview
My teaching methodology is entirely geared toward the student and what they want to achieve. It’s unlikely that we’ll be able to achieve much in one session: but my goal will be to understand your needs, what you want to achieve, and how we can develop you as a thinker. I should say that I am chiefly interested in mentoring undergraduates. I am not here to write your essays for you; instead, my role is to steer you in your own thinking, to develop your understanding of English language and English texts. Given my background, I tend to emphasise close attentiveness to words in their synchronic and diachronic states; I come from a background rooted in British Marxist theory and in textual materialism.

Andy Raven tutored Barry Hellman and his sister in guitar. Barry worked on tuning, finger exercises on the E and A strings, and the "Come As You Are" riff. His sister was introduced to the chromatic scale and finger exercises to improve dexterity. Andy suggested a YouTube video of the "Come As You Are" riff for homework.

Andy and Cara covered bar chords (B minor and F sharp minor), drop D tuning, and right-hand techniques for a specific song. Cara practiced the new chords and strumming patterns, and Andy provided feedback on her finger placement and tone. They agreed to schedule the next lesson for Tuesday of the following week and Andy will send the chords written down.

Andy is giving Cara online guitar lessons, focusing on chords (E, A, D, C diatonic chords), transitions, and alternate tunings. He's helping her understand chord relationships within the key of C, using songs like "Rivers and Roads" as examples. He's also emphasizing rhythm practice with a GarageBand drum track and encouraging her to write her own chord progressions. They reviewed D minor chords and scheduled their next lesson.
