David Sánchez · Guitar Tutor · Bogotá, Colombia
Part of the Wiingy Tutor Spotlight Series – where we go beyond the profile page and introduce you to the real people behind your lessons.
Some tutors teach guitar. David Sánchez lives it.
Based in Bogotá, Colombia, David has spent over a decade teaching guitar, acoustic guitar, and bass to students across school, college, and adult levels. When he’s not on Wiingy, he’s performing with live bands, working as a guitar tech, or hunting for his next concert to attend with his girlfriend and his dog.
His Bachelor’s in Jazz Studies from SUNY Purchase took him to festival stages across Mexico, Colombia, Germany, and the US – and all of that energy comes straight into his lessons.
His philosophy is simple enough to fit on a t-shirt: it’s just about having fun with the instrument.
He sat down with us to talk about the solo that finally clicked, why AI will never practice for you, and the meme his students would definitely make about him.
Who is David Sánchez?
David holds a Bachelor’s in Jazz Studies from SUNY Purchase and has been performing internationally for years. But what sets him apart as a tutor isn’t just the credentials – it’s the fact that he’s still deeply active as a musician.
He plays with multiple live bands, fixes guitars professionally as a guitar tech, and stays plugged into the live music world. For his students, that means lessons grounded in how music actually works, not just how it’s taught in textbooks.
He teaches over 100 students and keeps every lesson moving with a technique-oriented but creativity-first approach. The goal is never perfection – it’s momentum, enjoyment, and progress that feels good.
The interview
Beyond being a Wiingy tutor, who are you in real life?
“I dedicate my life entirely to the guitar. I play with different live bands, I’m a guitar tutor for people in my local area, and I’m also a guitar tech, so I fix guitars too. Everything related to the guitar, that’s basically what I do. I live with my dog and my girlfriend here in Bogotá, and I love going to concerts, trying new restaurants, and hanging out with friends.”
Take us back to your first Wiingy lesson – were you calm or in full “please don’t let the WiFi crash” panic mode?
“I wasn’t panicked at all – I’ve been teaching on Zoom since the pandemic. I was actually relaxed, and everything went smoothly.”
What’s one small moment that made you feel like, “This is why I teach”?
“I remember this moment when we were working on a specific solo that the student was really struggling with, and when we were finally able to do the complete solo, that was a really good moment.”
His philosophy on getting better faster
When we asked David for his top tips for students who want to improve, his answer wasn’t about technique drills or practice schedules. It was about mindset.
“I always tell students it just depends on how much time they put into practicing. It’s all about having fun with the instrument – as long as it’s a hobby, that’s basically it.”
“It’s just about having fun with the instrument, because that’s what music is about. If you’re having fun, you’re doing things right.” – David Sánchez
It sounds simple, but it’s a deliberate teaching choice. Students who enjoy what they’re playing practice more, improve faster, and stick with it longer. David has built his entire approach around that truth.
What’s your trick for making boring topics interesting?
“I always try to have good communication with my students. The majority of them have guitar as a hobby, so for difficult topics I usually spread them across two or three lessons. If it’s not going well, I mix it up with something easier to keep the momentum going.”
If your teaching journey was a movie, what would the title be?
“‘It’s Just About Fun.'”
What kind of student were you – top scorer, last-minute procrastinator, or somewhere in between?
“I was always on top of my things because I really love the guitar. I went to school for music and I tried to be the top scorer, but there were people far more talented than me, so I just kept going.”
On AI and Learning
David’s take on AI is probably the most musical answer we’ve heard on the topic.
“It depends on how you use it. For essays and writing, sure, they can be faster. But in music, AI is not going to be the one practicing for you. It’s good for discovering new repertoire, but it’s not going to do the practice.”
He uses it himself occasionally – mostly for finding new repertoire suggestions – but keeps lesson planning firmly in his own hands.
The story that says everything about him as a teacher
Most tutors have an unexpected moment that stands out. For David, it’s not a crisis or a funny misunderstanding – it’s something warmer than that.
“The one that always catches me off guard is when students ask about my own personal projects, what kind of music I make with my own bands. It makes me really happy because it’s not always the case that students are interested in that. But when they are, it’s a great moment.”
When your students are curious about your music, you’re not just their tutor anymore. You’re someone they look up to. That’s the kind of relationship that earns a Student Favourite title.
