How 1-on-1 singing lessons helped Catherine reconnect with her voice and herself

For Catherine, singing started in church – but it wasn’t until years later, after a difficult post-COVID period, that she returned to it as a form of healing.

What began as a creative outlet soon became a lifeline – helping her process anxiety, reclaim confidence, and reconnect with her body and emotions.

With Wiingy’s 1-on-1 singing lessons, and the support of her vocal coach Martina, Catherine didn’t just improve her voice – she rediscovered it.

Watch Catherine speak about her singing journey

“Martina connected with my story – and with my Spanish songwriting. That meant everything.” – Catherine

The starting point: “I just needed a way to express myself”

Catherine, based in the Chicagoland area, had always enjoyed singing. But for a long time, life got in the way. After enduring a rough couple of years, she found her way back to music – not for performance, but for healing.

“Singing helped me overcome anxiety. It helped me find my voice – literally and emotionally.”

She began writing her own songs, many in Spanish. Wanting to deliver them with confidence and clarity, she turned to voice lessons.

Why online 1-on-1 lessons worked

Catherine chose online 1-on-1 tutoring for one reason: convenience that didn’t compromise quality. She could log in from home, fit sessions into her work schedule, and maintain momentum with her singing goals.

“It’s just a click of a button – and I’m with my tutor. That makes it easier to show up, even on tough days.”

And when she met Martina, her Argentina-based tutor, something clicked – not just musically, but personally.

Building a deep tutor connection: “She cared about more than just my technique”

Martina wasn’t just a teacher – she was a mentor. She helped Catherine prepare for her first-ever live show, breaking songs down section by section and building up Catherine’s confidence along the way.

“She gave me the confidence to just go up and sing. I performed without nerves. I just enjoyed the experience – and that’s all I ever wanted.”

They bonded over language, creativity, and emotion. Catherine felt seen – not just as a student, but as an artist.

A safe space for growth (Even on tough days)

Catherine and Martina share a heartfelt moment during a singing lesson, turning emotions into beautiful music together.

Not every lesson was technically perfect – and that was okay. In one emotional session, Catherine wasn’t feeling her best. But instead of pushing through, Martina helped her harness that emotion and channel it into the music.

“You can’t fake a good vocal day when you want to cry. But Martina didn’t judge – she helped me use that emotion.”

That moment turned into one of Catherine’s most powerful lessons: that vulnerability is a strength in music.

A song that sums it up: “Asombro”

Catherine wrote and dedicated a bilingual Spanish-English song called Asombro (“Wonder”) to the journey she’s on – and the people supporting her, like Martina.

“It’s about someone being a meaningful part of your life. It’s in Spanish, and it’s deeply personal – just like my lessons.”

Growth in every session: “Even in lesson one – I saw hope”

Catherine didn’t need months to feel improvement. From her very first session, Martina helped her feel capable and confident.

“After just one lesson, I thought – okay, I can do this.”

Each session focused on refining something new: phrasing, tone, breathing. The feedback was consistent, practical, and kind – which made her want to keep going.

Busting the myth: “Yes, you can learn to sing online”

Some people think online singing lessons can’t be effective – Catherine strongly disagrees.

“It might even make you more focused. I’ve never had issues hearing my tutor or following instructions. In fact, I train my ear more now because I have to listen carefully.”

Logging into her lesson is now a highlight of her day – even on the days she thinks she doesn’t feel like singing.

“By the end of the lesson, I can’t stop singing. That’s the best part.”
