Girl learning to play guitar

Fast songs can be fun to play-but keeping up with quick chord changes and staying on beat? That’s where things get tricky.

Emma knew that struggle well. Even after practicing consistently, she still found herself stumbling over finger placement and timing, especially during faster transitions. Playing smoothly and in sync with a song felt just out of reach.

That all began to change after a few 1-on-1 guitar lessons with her tutor, Marco Flores. With his help, Emma made impressive strides in her timing, hand independence, and overall control.

Real Class insight: Emma’s one-on-one guitar session

In their most recent live lesson, Emma worked with Marco on chord transitions, finger independence, and improving timing. Here’s a breakdown of what they worked on during their session:

Mastering chord transitions – C to A and A minor

Emma struggled with transitioning quickly between C major, A minor, and G major chords. When transitioning between chords, Emma often hesitated and wasn’t confident in her finger placement.

What Emma learned:

“Marco helped me figure out how to move my fingers more efficiently between chords,” Emma recalls. “Instead of lifting my hand fully off the strings, he showed me how to keep my fingers close to the fretboard while switching. This made transitions much faster and smoother.”

Marco demonstrated how minimal finger movement could make all the difference, allowing Emma to focus more on speed and less on repositioning her hand. “It was amazing how quickly I could switch from C to G once I started minimizing my hand movement,” Emma says.

Building finger independence – one finger at a time

Another area Emma was working on was improving finger independence. When playing chords or scales, Emma found that her fingers weren’t moving independently, which made it harder to play fluidly.

What Emma learned:
“Marco showed me how to focus on one finger at a time,” Emma explains. “By thinking about each finger individually and where it needs to go, I was able to control my movement better. It really helped me build finger independence.”

Marco demonstrated how playing chord transitions finger by finger helped build muscle memory. “This exercise was a game-changer. My fingers didn’t get in each other’s way, and I was able to play more efficiently,” Emma recal

Improving timing – using the metronome for precision

Emma also struggled with keeping a consistent rhythm while playing, particularly when switching between chords. Marco suggested using a metronome to help her stay in sync with the timing and play more confidently.

What Emma learned:
“Using the metronome was really helpful in keeping me on beat,” Emma says. “I was able to play at a slower speed, focusing on accuracy, before gradually increasing the tempo. This method really helped me improve my timing.”

By using the metronome and practicing with steady beats, Emma was able to build a solid foundation for rhythm control.

Why this matters: you can improve faster with personalized feedback

Emma’s progress is a great example of how 1-on-1 lessons can give you the tools to overcome specific struggles. With real-time feedback and targeted exercises, Emma was able to overcome her timing issues and gain more control over her transitions and finger movements.

“Now I feel way more confident with my transitions and timing,” Emma says. “The lessons made everything so much clearer, and I’m excited to keep learning and improving.”
