Meet Tara

About your tutor

Hi there! I'm Tara, a music tutor with a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance and Clinical Psychology from the University of Rhode Island. Although I am classically trained in opera and classical piano, I have been better known as "The Jazz Girl" for my 1940s sound and obsession with music from the 20th century. That being said, I am no stranger to teaching popular music as people often call me "RI's Next Taylor Swift" for my extensive work in creating new and original songs all of the time. I frequently stream popular music during my car rides on the weekends, and my favorite singing technique involves singing loudly in the car with the windows down. My teaching philosophy revolves around creating a supportive and engaging learning environment for students of all ages and levels. I specialise in teaching piano, singing, songwriting, and guitar. I believe in personalised attention and customised learning plans to help students reach their full potential. Let's make music together!

Teaching methodology

I am a piano, guitar, and singing tutor who specializes in teaching students of all levels. My teaching methodology is centered around being empathetic, motivational, and collaborative with my students. With my experience as a mental health counselor and my research in psychology, I have discovered many different ways to teach the same subject to different people and although I certainly cannot read your mind, throughout our interactions I can gradually develop a customised teaching strategy appropriate for your learning styles and strategies. I believe in using the five senses in my teachings, as I understand many students lean towards more visual learning, but many other students lean towards more audio learning. I believe in building a strong foundation in both theory and practice, while also incorporating improvisation and composition exercises to encourage creativity. I provide positive suggestions for improvement to help my students reach their full potential by focusing on student strengths. In order to fix mistakes effectively, I will often teach students the names of the "wrong chords" in addition to the names of the "right chords" and I find this significantly helps in creating a positive and non-judgmental environment for growth. Join me in this musical journey where learning is fun and rewarding!
