Karl - Know your tutor
Hello! I'm Karl Kim, and if you have a elementary or middle school student who could use a little help with understanding math concepts, I am the one to call. With over three years of experience providing students with after school assistance with math homework, reinforcement of essential concepts is my specialty. With a few tricks up my sleeve, and some drills to help the students practice using what they learn, I can prepare your student for future success in math, whether that be success in school or a higher test score. My tutoring is available for all math levels up to Algebra 1, including elementary and middle school math. Whether a student is reviewing their times tables, learning to convert fractions, or solving for x, I am more than happy to help break down the steps necessary to get the solution the student is looking for, so that not only will they be able to solve the problem in front of them, but similar problems in the future as well.
Karl graduated from New York University

Class overview
I specialize in teaching how to solve problems by breaking down the process of solving. Step by step is the way to solve most, if not all, math problems that we find in our lives. Not only do I provide the step-by-step guide on how to solve the problem, I'll then follow up with a few practice drills that the student can use their newfound knowledge on. We will first solve a problem with me reminding them of the steps, and then solve some more problems as I gradually become more and more hands-off until the student can solve a problem without my assistance. My instruction is tailored to the students needs, and is designed to keep students engaged. I do everything I can to make sure that the student learns everything that they need to learn, filling in any gaps in their knowledge along the way, and ensuring that they have the tools to reach their goals.

The student and tutor reviewed previously assigned pieces, focusing on rhythm, note accuracy, and efficient fingering techniques. The tutor introduced new strumming patterns and a modified fingering approach for "The Star-Spangled Banner." The student was assigned specific sections to practice and encouraged to apply the new strumming patterns to older exercises.

The student practiced rhythm exercises in various time signatures, including 3/8, and worked on differentiating dynamic levels in a musical piece. They also learned about accent signs and slurs and sight-read pieces in F major and G major, with a brief review of transposition. The student is expected to practice the rhythm exercises and sight-reading pieces at home.

The Student reviewed musical pieces focusing on rests, eighth notes, and rhythm. The session included practicing muting techniques, playing one octave higher, and using a metronome for tempo control. The homework is to practice pieces 69, 70, and 71 with a metronome, focusing on accuracy and rhythm.

The session covered reviewing five-finger major patterns, an introduction to transposing music, and learning a new song with a focus on rhythm, dynamics, and repeats. The student practiced transposing exercises in different keys and worked on balancing dynamics while playing the new song. The tutor provided feedback on rhythm and dynamics, setting the stage for continued practice.

The student and tutor reviewed whole and half steps and then learned how to construct major five-finger patterns and major triads in various keys, including those starting on black keys. The student practiced playing five-finger exercises and triads. The session concluded with a plan to resume the regular Friday schedule.

The Student and Tutor reviewed guitar melodies, chords, and note reading, focusing on songs 45, 46, and practicing Green Sleeves. The session introduced sixth-string notes and sight-reading exercises, with emphasis on recognizing notes below the staff. The Student was assigned numbers 50 through 55 for practice, and the Tutor will provide a note chart.
