What is the AP exam fee?

The AP Exam fee is the amount of money that students must pay to take an Advanced Placement (AP) exam. AP exams are college-level exams that high school students can take to earn college credit or placement in advanced college courses.

The AP Exam fee varies depending on the location of the exam and the number of exams that a student is taking. For the 2024 school year, the AP Exam fee is as follows:

2024 AP Exam Fee

DescriptionCost per Exam
AP Exam (except AP Seminar and AP Research) taken in the U.S., U.S. territories, Canada, and DoDEA schools*$98
AP Exam (except AP Seminar and AP Research) taken outside the U.S.*$128
AP Seminar or AP Research Exam taken anywhere$146
Late-order exams
If you ordered your exam between November 16 and March 15 for full-year or first-semester courses incur a late order fee in addition to the exam fee.

This fee doesn’t apply to exams for courses that start after November 15 and exams for students who transfer into the school.
$40 per exam in addition to the exam fee
Unused/canceled exam fee
If you decide after the November 15 ordering deadline not to take an exam that was ordered for you, the charge is $40 per exam instead of the full exam fee.

The $40 fee applies to any unused or canceled exam, including an exam ordered for a student who qualifies for a College Board fee reduction. It’s important to tell your AP coordinator if you decide not to take an exam. This fee doesn’t apply if you transfer out of a school.
