From my desk: What I see as an algebra tutor across Australia
By Cantona Bolokang, Wiingy Maths Tutor
I’ve been tutoring algebra through Wiingy for several years now, working with students from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and beyond. As someone currently studying electrical engineering, I understand how foundational algebra is, not just for exams, but for how we think about problem solving.
Whether I’m helping a Year 8 student with linear equations or an adult learner preparing for a return to study, I’ve seen just how much of a difference the right support can make.
Patterns I notice across different cities
In Sydney, especially in areas like Parramatta and Epping, I often meet high school students preparing for selective schools or keeping pace with fast-moving advanced programs. Algebra is introduced early, and the pressure to master it builds quickly. Students know the rules, but sometimes miss the "why" behind them.
In Melbourne, many of my students are focused on VCE Methods or Specialist Maths. In suburbs like Box Hill and Glen Waverley, students are preparing for ATAR exams and want to improve both accuracy and speed. Algebra shows up in almost every topic they study, and it’s often the part that makes or breaks a full-mark response.
In Brisbane and Adelaide, I’ve supported students who are strong in number work but unsure when letters enter the mix. Algebra feels like a language shift. Once they understand what x represents and how equations behave, everything else becomes more manageable.
Algebra returns in adult education too
I’ve also worked with adult learners in Perth and online from regional areas. Many are returning to study after a long break, preparing for TAFE entry, teaching degrees, or engineering courses. Algebra can feel intimidating at first, especially after years away from study. But it doesn’t take long before they start recognising patterns again, and gaining confidence.
The goals vary. Some want to pass an entrance test, others just want to keep up with their kids’ homework. In every case, it’s about building a strong foundation, one step at a time.
What helps students actually move forward
What helps most isn’t shortcuts. It’s taking the time to work through each concept properly. I guide students through examples, help them connect ideas, and give them space to ask questions without fear of getting it wrong.
Algebra is a skill that builds everything from financial literacy to coding logic. Whether my students are in Year 7 in Strathfield or studying late at night from Townsville, I see real progress when we make things clear, not just correct.
