Hands-on Singing lessons with problem-solving focus

My method of teaching first starts with knowing my student. The questions I ask are, "How old are you, do you have musical experience, what has peaked your interest to begin studying, and what are your three favorite songs to sing?" Next, I want to observe my student's natural gifts (every student has them!). I want to gauge their level of interest and see what draws their focus. Each class starts with a little slice of history. It could be about a composer or musician the student has expressed interest in, a particular era of music, or the classification of musical instruments. Next, we move on to theory, where we learn the language of music. We utilize white boards, flash cards, and games. As we progress, students will learn to piece notes together which I will play or sing back to them. It's fun exercise! The last two thirds are devoted to training the voice. We start with breathing techniques, increasing endurance, and proper vocal posture from the inside out. From there, we run a multitude of scales, increasing range and proper placement. And then the real fun begins! Learning songs. Each quarter we will learn from a different genre of music - classical, Broadway, pop, etc. And we will learn one of the student's favorite songs every quarter. As we progress, we will move into original composition. I love the natural dichotomy in the structure of music with the creativity and improvisation of art. That is incorporated into my teaching. I focus on developing both technical skills and creativity in performance and composition. Through my approach, students not only learn the fundamentals of singing but also discover their own unique style and voice. My goal is to make learning a fun and enriching experience for all my students.
