About the tutor

Hi! My name's Lia Sofia Arias-MacKenzie (you can just call me Lia) , and I teach guitar, bass, and ukulele. I've been a guitar player for 14 years and a bassist for 10 years and during this time I've played everything from classical/contemporary to jazz/funk/latin to metal/rock. In my opinion, the best way to teach is to: 1. Ask what you want to do 2. Show you how to do it 3. Guide you through doing it yourself. I've dealt with difficult or just plain bad music teachers, and the way to avoid that is to make music fun and challenging. I'm studying music at University of California Merced and music is what I strive to do with my life. As a teacher and musician, I believe it is important to understand why we do certain things in certain ways, not just do them without question. I am open to adapting my lesson plans to the desires of my students as if you aren't getting enjoyment out of music there's no point, but my general lesson plan per hour is as follows: 1. ~5 minutes warm up. 2. ~15 minutes learning/dissecting/analyzing a song of your choice. 3. ~15 minutes songwriting/improvisation/soloing exercise. 4. ~15 minutes technique exercise. 5. ~10 minutes questions about anything or help learning a song of your choice.y This lesson plan has served my students well for years and it will serve you well if you grant me the privilege of teaching you.
