Boosting my GPA
by Tyberious Brooks | USA
I faced many challenges during my first semester in college. I was overwhelmed with freedom/independence and struggled with studying and keeping classroom focus. At the end of the first semester, I had a 2.7 GPA. I knew the second semester could not be a repeat of the first. I had to employ technology and the help of family and friends to overcome these challenges.
At the start of the second semester, I reviewed my schedule meticulously. I looked at times dates and locations. I used “Rate my Professor” to review the teaching styles of my professors. Once school started, I reviewed my syllabi for any extra credit assignments emailed professors, and inquired about any assignment “re-do” options. Then I needed a detailed study schedule and used all technology to set alarms to indicate study time, note review time, and library time for each course. Secondly, I found study groups and study places. I introduced myself to students who were successful in my difficult classes. I formed study groups with them. I also needed check-ins with my support system to encourage me to keep going.
My time-blindness made me very insecure and filled with self-doubt. I spoke to one of my parents once a week about my successes and gave an update on my challenges. Their words of encouragement kept me pushing. Lastly, I got a job in the library. Removing myself from dorm distractions was extremely helpful. The Library also forced me to learn all about my resources. Many resources are advertised in the library. I got to study while on the job. Hence, I got paid to study. After my second semester, my study patterns became ingrained in my daily habits. I improved and got better with each course and professor. I finished the second semester with a 3.2 GPA. I invested the summer to meet with the student support services center. I was able to discuss my challenges and disclose my ADHD diagnosis from elementary school. They applauded me for my interventions however they asked me to have a conversation with my Physician regarding my “time blindness” issues. After several discussions with my physician, I have decided to not start my Concerta and to stay focused on my current interventions. To date, I have a 3.4 GPA and my career goal is to become an Environmental Engineer. I want to supply clean water to areas that do not have clean water. The skills set of communication and time management have been essential to my growth in my major and will assist me with solving this global crisis.
