Growing up in a challenging neighborhood with a strong religious foundation had a profound impact on my upbringing. Despite facing adversity, my experiences have shaped me into a resilient and determined individual. My mother’s role as a reverend sheltered me from the harsh realities of our environment, but I believe that growing up in a more exposed and unsheltered setting could have enriched my life with valuable experiences and opportunities.

In the fifth grade, I was transferred to a religious private school, where I encountered academic difficulties due to my limited understanding of religious subjects. After three years, I returned to the public school system, feeling more aligned with my peers.

My passion for science ignited in the seventh grade when I discovered the wonders of the subject in Miss Taylor’s class. Field trips to places like Sandy Hook Beach and the Liberty Science Center broadened my horizons and deepened my love for science.

Despite initial setbacks, I eventually earned a high school diploma through unconventional means. Becoming a certified medical assistant allowed me to explore the medical field and nurture my curiosity for biology.

My academic journey continued, and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Saint Elizabeth University, with graduation expected in the Spring of 2024. The path has been challenging, marked by academic hurdles, financial struggles, and moments of self-doubt.

Despite questions about my age and qualifications, I have persevered, working two jobs to fund my education and overcoming financial obstacles as a single individual. Multiple relocations have been necessary to reduce living expenses.

Amidst these challenges, working at a local emergency room and serving as a biology lab assistant at the university has brought me immense joy. These experiences have strengthened my belief in the temporary nature of challenges and my unwavering determination to achieve my goals.

The dream of becoming a doctor still burns brightly in my heart. Although a recent opportunity in Cuba was limited by an age cap, I remain committed to pursuing a Master’s in Biology. My hope is to inspire others with my journey and the belief that, no matter the circumstances, giving up is never an option.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
