Ever since elementary school, standardized tests have been stressed for their importance. We learned test taking strategies like process of elimination and looked at practice problems all to prepare for a tedious test. However, I quickly learned that these tests have minor impact on oneself and are more of a reflection on the school. The SAT is no different, except the stakes are high because these scores supposedly reflect our value to future colleges. People spend hours studying and those who can hire specific SAT tutors who personally work to help students get the highest score possible. While the SAT can reflect certain skills in math, English, and grammar it is not an accurate representation of a student as a whole and their true potential.
A number out of 1600 does not reflect each individual’s unique story. Many times, students who have access to hours of personal tutoring can improve their score more effectively than people who prepare by themselves. While this test can gauge a general academic level, it cannot indicate a person’s determination, goals, dedication, or hard work. Qualities such as dedication and perseverance are what can set apart a good student from a great student and what colleges should be looking for. One test cannot truly show a student’s college readiness which is why more colleges now are test optional. Everyone who works hard for their SAT score should have the option to have it be considered in addition to everything else. My passions and years of dedication learning, volunteering, and competing in academic tournaments cannot be reflected by a number out of 1600. Each person has a different story and unique struggles that prove their will to succeed and make the most out of college education. SAT scores can only measure how good you can master college board format, overcoming common trick questions, and timing. While these life skills are often necessary for college level classes, they are not the most important aspect of college. College will build up necessary knowledge for your future profession, but will also allow for research opportunities, field experience, and encourage innovation. Especially in the STEM field, innovation and professional success are not indicated by one’s test taking skills. Additionally, the SAT does not assess topics like science or history apart from including reading passages regarding the subjects. This could also be a flaw since the SAT cannot even assess students in the four core subjects. Each student has a unique path and passions that drive them towards those passions and those values determine how they will benefit from college education
