April 2024 Scholarship Essay
Working Hard instead of Hardly Working.
by Raleigh Stansell | USA
The main strategy that I used in order to boost my GPA is to put in as much effort into my studies and schoolwork as possible while also expanding my mind in ways that were fun and interesting.
First of all, I would pay full attention to my teacher whenever they were giving a discussion. I would often ask clarifying questions whenever I was confused, and I would take notes as quickly as possible to cram as much information into my head as I could. Whenever there was one open and available I would practice lessons on AP Classroom to sharpen my mind, and I put my full effort into my homework. Similarly, I would study 2 nights before I had a big test and every night after in order to make sure I knew as much as possible before the test began.
I didn’t just work hard to strengthen my mind while in school, I also took different methods to strengthen my mind when I was relaxing. I would download games that strengthen the mind and reasoning skills, logic puzzles and escape games mostly. Also, I would spend some of my free time reading more and more advanced books that interested me. While the books didn’t pertain to the subject, they were still interesting to read and they kept my mind active. Similarly, I would do three dimensional puzzles in order to allow myself to have fun without playing a mind numbing video game.
However, there were some methods that didn’t work out so well and actually hurt my GPA. One of the first was to study until it was very late and wake up early in the morning. My sleep deprived brain couldn’t function properly and I ended up missing more obvious answers on tests and quizzes than I would have if I had had a full night’s sleep. Likewise, I wouldn’t recommend reading while the teacher is trying to give a lesson. Even though I understood and worked ahead of most of what the teacher was teaching, I still missed some crucial steps that were needed for assignments later on. While this is a no brainer, Studying only the night before a test or not studying at all really didn’t help my GPA as I was getting low grades on tests and quizzes.
By putting in the effort to use my mind both inside and outside of school, I was able to improve my GPA. While some methods were obvious like paying attention in class and asking clarifying questions, there were still ways I could expand my mind outside of school. Expanding your mind both inside and outside the classroom helped me to be more capable of learning more, and this helped me maintain a high GPA in the classroom.
