The Balancing Act
by Meghla Basu | Australia
As I approach my final years of secondary studies, it has been intriguing to observe the different perspectives of individuals as they navigate between academic excellence and diverse extracurricular involvement. I have now come to appreciate and recognise the value of striking a balance and integrating both elements with the same level of priority. Engaging in extracurriculars allows you to expand your horizons and discover your interests. However, academic excellence, defined by a high GPA, is undeniably the epitome of success and a reflection of your discipline towards learning. I firmly advocate for the engagement of extracurriculars beyond academics; a safe environment where an individual is open to explore their passions, providing mental clarity and peace.
Throughout my academic years, I have strived to maintain excellent grades, and the outcomes are inevitably rewarding. I have received recognition for my outstanding performance and engage in arising opportunities, which many are related to the STEM field. To achieve academic success, it is critical for me to highlight the dedication and diligence necessary to reach this goal. It requires skilful time management to ensure that you maintain a balanced lifestyle to prevent burnout.
Conversely, a restricted focus on a high GPA can limit your outlook and can be extremely mentally draining. It is the participation in extracurricular activities where the myriad of personal development unfolds. Engaging in team sports, community services and clubs cultivates skills beyond the academic world. Leadership, teamwork, and flexibility are qualities that are not measured by the academic outcome but are vital for success in the real world within your lifestyle, jobs, and social activities.
My involvement in various extracurricular activities has been revolutionary. From learning an instrument, participating in team sports, and volunteering within my community, these experiences have played a monumental role in broadening my perspective, developing interpersonal skills and fostering a deep understanding of the world around me. In conjunction with personal skills, the environment within my extracurricular activities has allowed me to create meaningful connections and stem social skills.
Playing this balancing act is my priority for a healthy approach, consequently, this presents additional challenges. Time management is pivotal, where prioritisation comes into play. This is where a bit of thought needs to be put into practice, where the decisions made should positively impact you. The rewards that come with this balancing act are immeasurable, equipping individuals with the skills and experience needed to thrive in a constantly evolving world.
Ultimately, my priority is striving to play this balancing act of academic excellence and engaging in activities for holistic personal development. I have recognised that all these elements contribute uniquely to shaping me as a dynamic and accomplished individual, as well as contributing to my society.
