April 2024 Scholarship Essay
Goals, Persistence and Acceptance (GPA)
by Kristina Camacho | USA
Boosting your GPA can be a fun challenge if faced with optimism and excitement. Something that seemed like a fairy tale to me in 2009 when my younger sister passed away from cancer.
Around this time it seemed like nothing I tried to get myself back into the love of education during college would work. My optimism and excitement for the world, education and life had plummeted and so did my GPA.
In order to regain my love for education for knowledge’s sake; I had to go through counseling and face the darkest sadness that I had refused to face. I had to grieve the loss of my sister and become ok with surviving her death. Survivors guilt had plagued me and made any achievement taste bitter and wrong. My GPA continued to plummet.
After receiving counseling I learned that I could achieve great things in life to honor my sisters memory and to live a life we both could be proud of.
Now that I am back in school I know I have a long road ahead of me to boost my GPA. The plan I have been perfecting is something I like to call the ‘holy trinity’ and it includes care taking my ‘Mind – Body – Spirit.’
By exercising my body, my mind can think clearly and actively. By challenging my mind and becoming curious knowledge is invigorating and finally by settling my spirit I have more light to see the road ahead. This is a drastic change from the darkness behind me that I allowed to hold me back.
Utilizing this simple method with a routine, goals and persistence nothing can stop me from achieving anything I set my mind to. Receiving my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is what my mind is currently set on.
I plan on achieving this goal by March 2026 by setting aside 3 hours every morning to wake up, meditate on my future, exercise, and eat a healthy balanced breakfast. This has proven to be the best way to prepare my mind for challenges, de-stress, and start my day with 4 accomplishments which releases dopamine and serotonin allowing me to start my day with natural positive energy, optimism and excitement for the day ahead.
Now I can direct that energy towards my education and boosting my GPA. With additional dedicated and scheduled time I am consistent in the time I have budgeted towards caretaking and studying. This allows me to be vigilant about my goals and how my time and energy is directed towards this goal. Setting up a schedule for myself and my studies I can clearly track my progress and tweak my approach as needed.
