Why Extracurriculars Matter
by Klevi Misha | USA
I always tried to maintain good grades in high school but I think my real essence is best shown by what I did beyond the classroom. During this time, I was actively involved with Lodi robotics teams that managed to reach the semifinals of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. At the same time, I participated in the Lodi construction club, which improved my abilities and knowledge of practical application.
When I moved to Dumont, I took up this opportunity as a turning point in my life so that it could add value to me through an internship at ADM Tronics. This experience increased my knowledge of the professional world and helped me practice theory into practical aspects of learning hence making learning more holistic.
Moreover, I was a track athlete during winter and spring seasons where my title as a varsity track athlete was well deserved. In the autumn, my other sport was football thus demonstrating that these sports were diverse. These various exposures in games contributed immensely towards refining my physical prowess besides teaching me about teamwork, discipline and perseverance.
For me, participation in extracurricular activities is not simply something to be ticked off on an application form; it demonstrates character, dedication and courage to leave one’s comfort zone even if it achieves personal and team goals. In addition, I found various applications for my theoretical knowledge through the Lodi robotics teams and construction club that were platforms towards problem-solving skills and creative thinking. The trials and tribulations taught me adaptability and resourcefulness, two necessary virtues for college student life.
My internship in ADM Tronics gave me the opportunity to narrow down a significant difference between academia and industry by understanding what happens with my studied topics in practice. It gave me a brief insight into the world of professionals, which not only imparted practical skills and knowledge but also went beyond class borders.
In athletics, involvement in the varsity track and football testify to my desire for physical health, teamwork as well dedication. These sports have not only made me physically fit but also developed in my nature resilience, leadership and strategic thinking.
Basically, though the achievement of high GPA might be an indication that I have aced academics; my extra-curricular activities define more diverse dimensions to character and attributes. I think that people who are involved in extracurricular activities show an active approach to personal and academic growth. As I am trying to get funds to cover my college education, it is my hope that my range of experiences demonstrate how dedicated and multi-talented an individual I can be while embracing all the challenges as well as opportunities university life provides.
