January 2024 Scholarship Essay
The competitive world accepts strong extracurriculars
by Apshara Rajapoopathy | Sri Lanka
Since we belong to a very competitive world, we must outrun everyone else to reach our goal before they do. However, our parents, educators, and others in our society rooted in us the belief that to succeed in this cutthroat world, we needed to do well in education. Of course, I believe that education plays a major role in leading an excellent life, but it’s not the sole factor in achieving success in life. A person cannot lead a prosperous life throughout their entire life if they are achieving better results in their studies. In today’s world, we have to create multiple chances for success. Therefore, to have a beneficial influence on our lives, we had to improve our abilities and get real-world experience.
Everyone is aware that a person’s grade point average is determined by their academic performance throughout their academic career, and how this can be an important indicator of their success in life? Their academic experiences cannot determine their future success because they were unable to concentrate on their studies due to a wide range of issues, such as new concerns regarding environmental adaptation, economic hardships, new methods of instruction, feelings of separation from friends and family, and even more. Therefore, this aspect cannot be compared to extracurricular activities that define a significant portion of our lives.
Based on my personal experience, I will only recommend extracurricular activities that have had a significant impact on my life so far, rather than my GPA scheme. My health issues during my undergraduate years prevented me from being an excellent student during my graduation studies. However, I am confident that I have achieved both my professional and personal goals. My graduation studies indicate that I only received a 60% overall. But I’m ensure in saying that I had enough real-world experience to pursue my intended career. I didn’t have any experience when I started that career, but after three years, I have enough skills to be almost a mid-senior in my position. In addition, I was assigned to oversee a project based within a region. I gained an abundance of clarity for both my management file and my practical experience through this. I recently got a job offer that is flexible with my requirements. These are the finest illustrations of my experiences as an outcome of developing my extracurricular and real-world skills, which outshine my academic achievements in regard to GPA.
In the modern competitive employment market, recruiters are looking for applicants with extracurricular activities and additional abilities because, as I mentioned before, over 90% of qualified candidates have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Currently, to choose an appropriate candidate for the responsible role, recruiters will give their full attention to the candidates’ extracurricular activities and expertise. For instance, you may not be chosen for a position even though you have a bachelor’s degree or higher and a strong GPA, if the recruiter is looking for a basic certification or another ability that you weren’t able to get through your education.
As an experienced person, I will strongly admit that if you did not develop your extracurricular activities and abilities in this competitive environment, a higher GPA will not lead to successful functioning in your life. A firefly with many extracurricular skills will stand out from other insects with similar skills and academic accomplishments.
