01 — Executive Summary

Key Findings at a Glance

Private tutoring costs vary dramatically across American cities. Where you live can mean the difference between paying $44 and $59 per hour for the same lesson.

$15.27

Gap Between Cheapest and Most Expensive City

Detroit averages just $43.83/hr while New York City tops the chart at $59.10/hr, representing a 35% cost difference for the same subject matter.

$51.19/hr

Potential Savings by Choosing the Right Platform

Parents who compare platforms before booking can save over $51 per session, choosing budget-friendly platforms over premium ones for equivalent quality.

#3

Salt Lake City's Surprise Ranking

Despite being a smaller, inland market, Salt Lake City ranks as the 3rd most expensive city for private tutoring, defying geographic expectations entirely.

$90.66

New Orleans SAT Math Tutors Per Hour

The highest subject-city combination in our entire dataset, far outpacing the national SAT math average of $59.57/hr.

02 — Why This Matters

The Hidden Geography
of Educational Spending

Private tutoring is no longer a luxury. Across the United States, millions of families budget for one-on-one academic support, music lessons, and test prep every single month. The question is no longer whether to hire a tutor, but how much that decision will actually cost.

Our research reveals that tutoring costs are shaped by geography, platform choice, and subject in ways that most families have never considered. A piano lesson in Detroit costs nearly 35% less than the same lesson in New York City. An SAT math session in New Orleans can run three times the price of a coding class in Atlanta.

These are not marginal differences. Over a typical academic year with weekly sessions, these gaps translate into thousands of dollars, making platform and city awareness an essential part of any family's educational planning.

04 — Unexpected Findings

The Data Will Surprise You

Three findings that break conventional assumptions about where tutoring is cheap and where it is not.

Surprise No. 1

Salt Lake City

The Inland City That Costs Like a Coast

Salt Lake City ranks as the 3rd most expensive city in the entire dataset. For a mid-sized inland metro with no coastal premium, this is a striking anomaly. High tutor demand driven by the city's rapidly growing tech sector and strong academic culture appears to be pushing rates well above expectations.

$56.70

Avg hourly rate, all subjects

Surprise No. 2

Atlanta

The Cheapest Major Metro in America

Atlanta is a major Southern metro home to dozens of universities, yet it ranks 2nd most affordable for private tutoring. A large pool of qualified tutors, competitive platform pricing, and lower tutor cost-of-living keeps rates remarkably accessible for families.

$43.85

Avg hourly rate, just $0.02 above cheapest city

Surprise No. 3

New Orleans

SAT Math Tutors Hit $90.66/hr Here

New Orleans ranks 10th overall, but its SAT math tutoring rates are in a category of their own. At $90.66/hr, this is the highest subject-city combination in the entire dataset. Scarce supply of specialized test prep tutors appears to be driving rates far beyond the national SAT math average of $59.57.

05 — Subject Breakdown

Consistent

Wiingy's Pricing Discipline

Wiingy tutors range from $21 to $66 per hour, offering a transparent, mid-market price band that gives families reliable budgeting without the volatility of open-marketplace platforms.

🏆

Why Wiingy Is the Smartest Choice for Families

The tutoring market splits into two extremes: premium platforms like Wyzant charge top dollar for name recognition, while budget platforms like Care.com and Preply offer low rates but with significant variability in tutor quality and vetting. Wiingy occupies the optimal middle ground.

At $43.87/hr on average, Wiingy is 44% less expensive than Wyzant while delivering a rigorously vetted tutor pool. Unlike open marketplaces where anyone can list a profile, Wiingy reviews every tutor before activation. This means families are not trading quality for savings; they are getting both.

The price band of $21 to $66/hr also provides predictable budgeting that parents can plan around, unlike platforms where top-end rates swing unpredictably. For families seeking consistent quality at a fair, transparent price, our data consistently points to Wiingy as the best value platform in the market.

07 — Affordability in Context

Cheap Tutoring Isn't Always
Actually Affordable

A city with low tutor rates can still be unaffordable for local families if incomes are low. We cross-referenced tutoring rates against median household income data to surface the real affordability picture.

08 — Expert Perspective

What the Data Is Telling Us

Observations from the Wiingy Research Team on what these price patterns reveal about the private tutoring market in 2026.

The Salt Lake City finding was the one that genuinely surprised us. You expect New York and Los Angeles to top these rankings. But seeing a mid-sized inland city consistently outprice Boston across most subjects tells you something important about how local demand dynamics can override regional income patterns.

Wiingy Research Team, Market Analysis Division

Parents often assume that coding tutors are premium because tech is premium. Our data says the opposite. The democratization of programming education has created a massive supply of tutors, and supply is winning. It is one of the clearest examples we found of market forces working in families' favor.

Wiingy Research Team, Subject Pricing Analyst

Platform choice is the single biggest lever families are not pulling. The gap between a Wyzant booking and a budget platform is not about quality in many cases; it is about marketplace positioning. Informed families can capture that $51-per-hour difference and redirect it directly into more sessions.

Wiingy Research Team, Platform Economics Lead

Atlanta being the second most affordable city is not an accident. It has a large student population, a competitive local tutor market, and income levels that attract tutors without pushing rates sky-high. It is a model for what healthy tutor market equilibrium looks like in a major metropolitan area.

09 — Takeaway

The Cost of Ignorance Is
Higher Than the Cost of Tutoring

The gap between what an informed family pays for private tutoring and what an uninformed one pays can be thousands of dollars a year. Geography matters. Platform choice matters. Subject matters. This report exists to close that information gap, giving every family the same access to data that was previously invisible.

Whether you are in Detroit looking for the best deal, in Salt Lake City wondering why rates feel high, or in New York City searching for alternatives to premium platforms, the answer is the same: compare before you book, and use data to do it.

10 — Methodology

How We Built This Index

Our approach was designed for transparency, reproducibility, and breadth. Here is exactly how the data was gathered and processed.

13,914

Tutor listings collected and analyzed

30

U.S. cities covered across all major regions

5

Platforms scraped and compared

7

Subject categories analyzed per city

Step 01 — Data Collection

Platform-Level Tutor Listings

Hourly rate data was collected from five major tutoring platforms: Wyzant, Superprof, Preply, Care.com, and Wiingy. For each city, tutor profiles were gathered across seven subjects: Coding, SAT Math, Piano, Guitar, Singing, French, and Spanish.

Step 02 — Standardization

Consistent Hourly Rate Format

All prices were normalized to a per-hour rate in U.S. dollars. Listings without a clearly stated hourly price were excluded from the dataset to maintain consistency.

Step 03 — Aggregation

City and Subject Averages

City averages were computed as the arithmetic mean of all valid hourly rates across all platforms and subjects. Subject and platform averages were computed across all 30 cities.

Step 04 — Validation

Data Integrity Checks

Each listing was reviewed to confirm it represented an actively bookable tutor profile. Duplicate entries were removed. No outlier trimming was applied; all listed rates are included.

Platforms: Wyzant, Superprof, Preply, Care.com, Wiingy. Subjects: Coding, SAT Math, Piano, Guitar, Singing, French, Spanish. Cities: 30 major U.S. metropolitan areas. Data Period: Early 2026.
