Hola! Mi nombre es Hans Hawley. I've been teaching Spanish for nearly 20 years in various schools in the United States of America. I was not born a native speaker. I had to learn it the old fashioned way - just like you are doing now - so I thoroughly understand where the challenges lie for students. I started taking Spanish classes in 7th grade. I took them through college, so I have the academic background necessary to teach the skills, grammar, drills, etc. But I also spent two years living in Venezuela in South America, where I honed my skills and learned how to speak like a local. I've been to Mexico many times as well. In addition to speaking Spanish, I'm also fluent in a Caribbean dialect called Papiamento, which is spoken on the island of Bonaire, where I lived for 5 months. I've also studied French, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, and German. In other words, I know what it takes to learn a foreign language!

I use many different methodologies for English. The communicative approach using pictures and games and activities for learning English is my main approach. I also use the traditional methodologies with exercises and more of a grammar focus when needed. For conversation I use a text or image to start the conversation or I go according to the student's need or expressed preference. I usually mix methodologies a lot to customise for the student as I find that this is the most effective way to work with students. It is also good for me as a teacher to find the best ways to get students to use English at the required level and in the best possible way for themselves. Methodolody is really very important and I value it as a teaching tool. The best thing for me is to find the methodologies that work best for my student, for their achievement!
