About your tutor

Hello! I'm Carly Splett, a music tutor specializing in teaching violin. I have been playing violin since 2002, and studied with numerous teachers across Canada since that time. My experience includes playing as concertmaster for my local youth and community orchestra, and as a violinist in university orchestras 2013-2018. I've attended workshops and camps including Orford, Valhalla Summer School of Music, and Cassa Amici. Violin instructors who I've had the privilege to learn from include: Michael van der Sloot, Donovan Seidle, David Lakirovich, Elaine Henchell, and Johnathan Crow. I graduate with my Bachelor's Degree of Music in Integrated Studies in 2018. My teaching philosophy is centred around creating a supportive and engaging learning environment, and passing down all of the tips and tricks that I've learned from great musicians over the years. I believe in tailoring my lessons to each student's unique learning style and pace, ensuring they stay motivated and enjoy the process of learning music. By incorporating demonstrations with thorough explanations, practical exercises, and personalized feedback, I aim to help students not only improve their violin skills but also develop a true passion for music. Let's make learning music a wonderful journey together!

Teaching methodology

As a violin tutor, I specialize in teaching school students in a creative and interactive manner. My teaching style is focused on demonstrating concepts in a detailed and informative way, using lectures to engage students. I believe in making learning fun and engaging, which helps students excel in music exams. I create personalized learning plans that combine theory and practice, and leverage digital music production software and interactive music theory apps to enhance the learning experience. With my methodology, students are able to grasp complex musical concepts and improve their skills effectively. My focus is always going to come back to scales and studies/etudes. These are the fundamentals needed to learn and refine different skills as a musician, and many well-known studies have been designed to focus on precise technique practice, such as Kreutzer and Sevcik studies. I also place a focus on proper piece practice, such as the correct way to drill passages. When looking at learning and performing pieces, it is important to understand the context of the work. What is the music theory telling you about how to play certain phrases/passages? When was this piece composed, and how does that inform how it is meant to be performed (bowing techniques, vibrato use, style of shifting, etc.)? Context is important, and I place a lot of value on imparting that knowledge.
