What are Factors
The factor is a basic mathematical concept that is introduced to students in the primary grades of their school education. Factor can be defined as the numbers that fully divide another number with no remainder. In simple words, factors of a number are the numbers that can be divided by the given number evenly.
Factors can be calculated using the division method and multiplication. Let’s understand this concept with an example:
Example:
Find the factors of 10 using both division and multiplication methods.
Answer:
Factors of 10 using the division method:
For the division method, you have to divide a sequence of numbers by 10. The numbers that get divided by 10 completely are the factors of 10.
10 ÷ 1 = 10 (Remainder 0) |
10 ÷ 2 = 5 (Remainder 0) |
10 ÷ 3 = 9 (Remainder 1) |
10 ÷ 4 = 8 (Remainder 2) |
10 ÷ 5 = 2 (Remainder 0) |
10 ÷ 6 = 4 (Remainder 4) |
10 ÷ 10 = 1 (Remainder 0) |
So, the factors of 10 using the division method are 1, 2, 5, and 10.
Factors of 10 using the multiplication method:
For finding the factors of 10 using the multiplication method you need to multiply two numbers whose result will be the given number, i.e., 10.
1 X 10 = 10 |
2 X 5 = 10 |
5 X 2 = 10 |
10 X 1 = 10 |
So, the factors of 10 using the multiplication method are 1, 2, 5, and 10.
