Direct Download to micro:bit: If you want to directly flash your file, then we can simply set the micro:bit as the download location. This also helps us avoid dragging and dropping the HEX file from the download drive to the micro:bit drive of the computer. In this article, we will show you how to set micro:bit as the download location when you are transferring your code to micro:bit.

How To Set micro:bit as Download Location?

When you try to transfer code to your micro:bit, which is called Flashing, we connect our micro:bit to our computer, download the code as a HEX file and then move it from our downloads drive in our computer to the micro:bit drive, that is the usual process we have to go through in order to transfer and run our code in micro:bit.

But what if we tell you instead of moving the HEX file from download to the micro:bit drive, you can set micro:bit as download location directly?

That will make this process one step shorter and easier, right? So let us see how to do that. The process to do this is different for different browsers as the changes have to be made in your browser.

How To Set micro:bit As Download Location for Chrome?

To set the micro:bit as download location for Chrome, follow the steps as given below:

  • Step 1: In a new browser tab, navigate to your Chrome settings and look for Downloads.
  • Step 2: Click on the “Downloads” option. Here you will see the option “Ask where to save each file before downloading.” If this option is disabled, enable this option by clicking on it, as shown in the image below:

  • Step 3: Now, the next time you click on the download option to download the HEX file, Chrome will ask you where you want to download the file as you can directly choose the micro:bit drive from here.

How To Set micro:bit As Download Location for Safari?

  • Step 1: Open Safari preferences from the browser’s file menu.
  • Step 2: Go to the “General” tab, which is the first tab. Here you will see the option “file download location”. Click on it and it will present you with three options; one is downloads, the second is ” Ask where to save each file before downloading” and the third is “other”. You need to select the second option, i.e., “Ask where to save each file before downloading”.
  • Step 3: Now, when you click on the download option to get the HEX file, Safari will ask you where you want to save it, and you can choose the micro:bit drive directly from here.

How To Set micro:bit as Download Location For Microsoft Edge?

  • Step 1: Open the Microsoft Edge browser settings by clicking on the options menu in the top right corner of the browser window.
  • Step 2: In settings, click on advanced settings and then click on “Downloads” and set the download option to “Ask me what to do with each download”. 
  • Step 3: Now, when you click on the download option to get the HEX file, Safari will ask you where you want to save it, and you can choose the micro:bit drive directly from here.
