What Are Two Ways to Power the micro:bit?

There are two ways of connecting a power supply to micro:bit and they are:

  • Using USB cable
  • Using a battery pack

How To Connect a Power Supply to micro:bit Using USB Cable?

You can easily power up your micro:bit using a USB cable that comes with the BBC micro:bit GO pack. The micro:bit pack usually has a USB type-B micro connector and USB lead, and its requirements depend on what kind of device you are connecting your micro:bit to. Some computers and mobile devices require a USB Type-C cable. For Apple, you need Thunderbolt connectors. Once you have the required USB that is compatible with your computer or mobile phone, simply connect it and the power supply is to micro:bit is on and it doesn’t need anything else.

How To Connect a Power Supply To micro:bit Using a Battery Pack?

Along with USB power, you can power your micro:bit with a battery pack containing 2 x zinc or alkaline AAA batteries.

  • To power up the micro:bit, attach the battery pack by holding the base of the connector and attaching it to the JST socket on the micro:bit board, and the micro:bit is connected to a power supply. To save power, disconnect the connector from the JST socket.
  • The latest version of micro:bit, i.e., micro:bit V2, comes with a battery saver setting wherein there is no need for you to unplug the connector from the socket on the micro:bit in order to save power. For this, simply press down the reset button on the back of the micro:bit to power on or power off your micro:bit while being connected to the battery pack.
