Faria - Know your tutor
I am a solutions-driven and award-winning early career graduate student with over five years research activities in Asia and North America, that includes computer-assisted surgery training in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), University of Ottawa, Canada. I was awarded an International Doctoral Scholarship to begin my PhD studies in Artificial Intelligence applied to surgical workflow data. Moreover, I received Admission Scholarship- Doctorate in my 3rd year of PhD studies. Prior to this I was the recipient of an Academic Scholarship at the American International University-Bangladesh where I graduated with Summa & Magna Cum Laude distinctions. I am a member of several organizations including being Vice President of Electrical Engineering Graduate Students' Association (EEGSA), former student representative at the EECS Faculty Council, and both Secretary & Treasurer and Web coordinator at uOttawa ACM-W Student Chapter – which supports, celebrates, and advocates for the full engagement of women in all aspects of the computing field, along with being a voice for equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

Mathematics concepts taught by Faria
The tutor and student reviewed Python's control flow statements including `break`, `continue`, and `pass`. They then transitioned to defining functions, exploring parameters, default values, and anonymous functions using `lambda`. The session concluded with an in-depth look at data structures, covering list methods, using lists as stacks and queues, and list comprehensions, with a plan to continue these topics in future sessions.
Break and Continue Statements
The `pass` Statement
Defining and Calling Functions
Lists as Stacks and Queues
List Comprehensions
The class provided an in-depth review of Python programming fundamentals, covering string and list manipulation, control flow statements (while loops, if-elif-else), and for loops. The Student practiced these concepts through coding exercises and discussions, with the Tutor guiding them through the syntax and application, including how to handle user input via the command line.
For Loops and Iteration
Control Flow: If
Elif
Else Statements
Lists: Mutable Sequences
String Indexing and Slicing
The Tutor and Student worked through problems related to calculating the surface area and volume of spheres, cylinders, and composite shapes involving cones and hemispheres. They practiced applying formulas, deriving unknown variables like radius and slant height, and understanding scaling principles for dimensions, area, and volume. The session concluded with a review of key formulas for these shapes.
Surface Area and Volume of Spheres
Surface Area and Volume of Composite Shapes (Sphere + Cylinder)
Surface Area and Volume of Composite Shapes (Cone + Hemisphere)
Scaling in Geometry
The tutor and student worked on setting up a Python development environment in VS Code, troubleshooting installation issues, and configuring VS Code for interactive coding with Jupyter notebooks. They covered fundamental Python concepts including variable declaration, data types, arithmetic operations, string manipulation, and basic functions, with a focus on practical application and revision for the student.
Working with Strings and Multi-line Code
Basic Python Syntax and Operators
Jupyter Notebooks within VS Code
Setting Up VS Code Environment
Python Function Definition
Break and Continue Statements
Python Naming Conventions
Modulo Operator
The Tutor and Student reviewed concepts related to circles, including finding the domain and range, determining the equation of a tangent line, and calculating arc lengths and circumferences. They practiced these concepts by working through various problems from a worksheet and the student took notes on key formulas and steps.
Circle Domain and Range
Tangent Line to a Circle
Arc Length Calculation
Perimeter of a Shaded Region with Circles
