Lora Your chemistry tutor
I am a science tutor who loves science! I recently graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and am on the pre-medical track. Throughout college, I led independent supplemental study sessions in Principles of Genetics, making my own practice problems for students to use. I also tutored high school chemistry and middle school science in my free time, and have tutored since I was in high school. I have experience working with a variety of age ranges, from younger kids to college students. I love to spread my enthusiasm for science and personalize my tutoring to the students' needs. I love to lead engaging sessions and enjoy including real-world examples in my teaching. I am also a visual learner, so I draw diagrams to help explain concepts and will create specific practice problems for our session, along with answer keys for you to take away and continue to practice after our session. I request that my students send me their questions and topics of interest ahead of time (preferably 24 hours before), so I am able to sufficiently prepare material so that we can have a successful lesson. Let's work together not only to succeed in your science courses, but to enjoy the journey there!

Chemistry concepts taught by Lora
The Student and Tutor reviewed various methods for calculating enthalpy change, including bond enthalpies and standard heats of formation. They practiced drawing Lewis structures for molecules and applied these to solve thermochemistry problems. The Tutor provided guidance on balancing equations and converting between mass, moles, and energy, with a follow-up plan for the Student to provide their syllabus and practice with online resources.
Enthalpy of Reaction: Three Calculation Methods
Calculating with Bond Enthalpies
Lewis Structures: Drawing & Octet Rule
Calculating with Standard Heats of Formation (ΔH°f)
Molar Heat of Formation and Thermochemical Equations
The Student and Tutor reviewed Hess's Law by solving multi-step problems, including balancing equations with fractions. They then focused on calculating the enthalpy of a combustion reaction using standard heats of formation, balancing the chemical equation, and converting heat per mole to heat for a specific mass of reactant. The Tutor provided the Student with a website for practicing basic math skills and significant figures for quiz preparation.
Balancing Complex Chemical Equations (with Fractions)
Basic Fraction Arithmetic in Chemistry
Stoichiometry & Heat Released (Grams to Kilojoules)
Combustion Reactions: Complete vs. Incomplete
Standard States and Enthalpies of Formation
Enthalpy of Reaction (ΔHᵣₓₙ) from Standard Heats of Formation (ΔHf°)
Hess's Law of Summation
Student and Tutor reviewed various chemistry concepts from Unit 2 and Unit 3, focusing on missed questions from recent quizzes. They practiced calculations involving density, percent yield, and ion concentrations, and clarified concepts such as significant figures, electrolytes, solubility rules, limiting reagents, and balancing chemical equations. The Tutor offered to share the session's notes and recommended further practice.
Density and Unit Analysis
Percent Yield in Chemical Reactions
Solubility Rules and Electrolyte Classification
Mole Ratios and Ion Concentrations
Limiting Reactants and Excess Reagents
Balancing Chemical Equations & Law of Conservation of Mass
The Student and Tutor had a chemistry session to review Hess's Law, the law of summation, and bond energy in preparation for an upcoming quiz. They discussed the theoretical underpinnings of Hess's Law, worked through an example, and began solving more complex problems from the Student's review sheet, including a quick review of fraction arithmetic for chemical calculations.
Hess's Law: The Summation Principle
Manipulating Reaction Equations & Enthalpy (ΔH)
Combining Reaction Steps & Fractions
Calculating the Net Enthalpy Change
Student and Tutor focused on fundamental chemistry concepts, specifically unit conversions within the metric system and an introduction to dimensional analysis. They practiced converting between units like meters, centimeters, and millimeters, utilizing conversion factors and clarifying the role of exponents. The Tutor recommended online practice problems as follow-up work for the Student.
