Sophie - Get to know your vocal coach
Hello! :) My name is Sophie Bushell and I have recently finished studying musical theatre at professional drama schools for 5 years. I have also worked professionally in the industry when I made my West End Debut as a vocalist, in my last year of training. I have been trained in styles such as MT, Pop, Rock and Legit. I would love to coach anyone who is looking to enhance their vocal technique and performance. whether or not they’re starting as a beginner or advanced. After spending 5 years at drama school I have advanced knowledge in: * Auditioning for drama school - I have been to 3 of them so would to love to coach anyone who is about to start the drama school audition season * Repertoire - I would be able to assist students in building an appropriate rep book and how to chose the right material for specific auditions * Vocal technique - I would be able to pass down all the knowledge I gained about vocal technique from drama school and provide warm ups and exercises that were shown to me by industry professionals * Acting through song - Not only would we work on the technique but also the emotional aspect. Lyrics and character would be analysed in each of my student’s sessions * The musical theatre industry - I would say I specialise with anyone who is wanting to peruse musical theatre as this is why my expertise lie.

Singing concepts taught by Sophie
The Student and Tutor engaged in a singing lesson focusing on vocal warm-ups, assessing the Student's vocal range, and introducing new techniques like lip trills, belting, and twang. They analyzed the song "Skylark," practicing vowel exaggeration, breath support, and incorporating the "sob" vocal quality. Follow-up plans include the Tutor sending the Student's vocal range, finding alternative karaoke versions of the song, and continuing to develop speech and belt vocal qualities in future lessons.

Determining Your Vocal Range
The Student and Tutor introduced themselves and discussed their musical backgrounds and goals, including preparing for a pageant talent portion. The session began with vocal warm-ups, where the Tutor assessed the Student's natural singing technique. The main focus was on developing head voice for "legit" (classical) singing, using exercises like vowel breakdown and "sob quality," and applying these to a sample song before starting work on the Student's chosen song, "I Feel Pretty." Follow-up actions discussed included detailed work on the song's phrasing, acting for the pageant, and preparing a custom backing track.
