Priscilla - Get to know your vocal coach

Music has the power to inspire and transform us, and I believe learning music should be a joyful and meaningful experience! As a mezzo-soprano performer and music educator, I have been teaching piano and voice since 2016, working with complete beginners through to advanced performers. My teaching style is encouraging, personalised, and holistic. I believe everyone learns differently, so I tailor lessons to your individual goals, personality, learning style, as well as your musical interests. Whether you want to build strong technical foundations, prepare for exams or auditions, develop your confidence, or simply enjoy making music, I aim to make each lesson purposeful and engaging. Alongside technique and musicianship, I place great importance on musical expression and storytelling. I encourage you to understand the music you are performing and the why behind it. Ultimately, my aim is to help you discover and develop your own voice as a musician, artist, and person! Whether you are just beginning your musical journey or looking to take your skills further, I want you to leave each lesson with greater confidence and curiosity alongside a deeper connection to the music you create. Together, we will uncover what makes your voice unique and nurture your individuality, so you can express yourself authentically and develop your own artistic identity.

The Student and Tutor focused on various vocal warm-ups, practicing humming and lip trills to improve vocal placement and manage the voice's natural 'passaggio'. They also worked on breathing techniques, including nose breathing and engaging back rib support. The session concluded with practicing an Alicia Keys song, focusing on reducing tension in specific phrases, refining vowel sounds, and discussing the incorporation of personal riffs.

The Student and Tutor continued to work on vocal technique, focusing on lip trills and a 'Mama' exercise to improve range and control. They selected 'If I Ain't Got You' by Alicia Keys for future song work, with an emphasis on vocalizing riffs and sustaining vowels. The Student was encouraged to practice the exercises and sing through the chosen song, utilizing new physical imagery for vocal release.

Student and Tutor had an introductory singing lesson focusing on vocal warm-ups and exploring different vocal registers (chest, head, mix). They practiced exercises like lip trills, 'No, no, no,' 'Nya,' and 'Hoo' to develop breath control and smooth transitions. The student then applied these concepts while singing 'I Dreamed a Dream,' receiving feedback on transitions and vocal placement. The Tutor discussed customizing future lesson plans for the student's R&B/soul aspirations.
