Madison - Get to know your vocal coach
Hi everyone! My name is Madison Torkoff. I am a recent graduate of New York University's BFA Acting program. I am a professional actor & singer and have been taking voice lessons for more than 10 years. I have music directed/voice coached children aged 6-13 at a musical theatre summer camp for two years. My expertise lies in musical theatre styles, but I am also trained in pop/rock, classical, and other styles. Working with beginner and intermediate singers, I will tailor your lessons to help you achieve your goals and modify your training to your experience level and abilities. I'll start with a vocal assessment (scales, vocalizes, etc.) just to get to know your voice – come in with a song you love to sing! A typical lesson will consist of: - A vocal check-in (How's your voice today? What have you been feeling lately that I should know about?) - A voice warm-up (Warming up for your song's specific style and range) - Singing through a song of your choice (Send me the sheet music in advance!) - Working through the song – finely tuning each section and working on rough spots. Together, we will work on mastering melodies, musical expression, character arc, and how to tell a story through your musical performances. Let's hit those high notes and free your voice to soar!

Singing concepts taught by Madison
The Student and Tutor engaged in a detailed singing lesson focused on enhancing vocal technique and song performance. They worked through various warm-up exercises targeting breath control, tongue placement, and vocal resonance, before applying these skills to a specific song, "Flowers," concentrating on note precision, articulation, and vocal register blending. For homework, the Student was assigned breath control exercises using a straw and water, along with continued focus on vocal placement, while the Tutor committed to providing a custom piano-only track for the song to aid in precise melodic practice.

The Student and Tutor engaged in extensive vocal warm-ups, focusing on breath support, pitch accuracy, and opening the vocal cavity through exercises like lip trills and vowel modifications. They practiced a song with a backing track, refining timing, articulation, and dynamics for an audition. The Student was assigned to practice the song using a 'nay' vowel to improve timing and sustain proper breathing.

Student and Tutor had an introductory singing session, where the Student shared her musical background and goals. The Tutor conducted a vocal assessment, identifying good pitch accuracy but issues with breath support and vocal stamina. They practiced fundamental diaphragm breathing exercises and discussed the importance of blending head and chest voice, with a plan to focus on breath work and vocal connection in future sessions.
