Ben - Violin teacher

I follow a mix of the Suzuki method, which emphasises ear training and building playback skills, and the Royal Conservatory approach, which relies on reading music and knowledge of music theory. I adjust the balance between the two schools based on the students needs. For younger students I like to insentivise by setting fun goals such as being able to play a melody from their favourite movie. And to hold attention and make practicing easier at home, I try to gamify what they are working on. For older students I focus on giving them the tools the need meet their goals, whether they are preparing for an exam or mastering a difficult piece. For more advanced students, I believe the most important thing is the quality of their sound. Having a good quality of sound is just as important as playing the right notes. In our lessons we’ll work on improving their ear so they can identify poor sound, and refine their technique so they can correct it on their own. I believe in creating an honest but encouraging environment where students are made aware of the quality of their work but never made to feel discouraged. Music should be a fun outlet where students feel they can express themselves and escape stress and anxiety while working on something rewarding. That’s why I aim to make sure students leave every lesson motivated and confident.
