Joel - Get to know your vocal coach

Hi! I’m Joel, a vocal tutor covering classical, musical theatre, rock and jazz. I hold a Grade 8 Distinction in Classical Vocals, giving a strong technical foundation, but I believe singing should never be limited to one style. I work across rock and alternative tones, and bring in jazz phrasing, freedom, and expression to help singers sound more natural and authentic. With a background in theatre, I focus on storytelling, performance, and confidence, helping you hit more than just “right notes”. If you feel stuck sounding careful or controlled, we can unlock a more expressive, personal voice together. I love working with all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners finding their voice for the first time, to more advanced singers refining technique, style, and performance skills. My approach is always tailored to the individual, so every student feels supported and challenged in the right way. I’m also passionate about modern sound tech and composing, using production-aware thinking to help you understand how your voice translates in real performance spaces, or in the studio. Whether you’re building confidence, preparing for exams, or just want to enjoy singing more, I’ll help you become the best version of your voice. Lets make your voice, YOUR voice.

The Student and Tutor commenced with vocal warm-ups and then delved into a new topic: songwriting. They practiced developing a song based on a core 'intention' or 'motive,' with the Student creating lyrics and musical ideas for a verse and chorus. The session also addressed the Student's challenges with specific high notes in a rock song, exploring techniques like mixed voice, dynamic control, and potential song transposition, with a new songwriting assignment given for homework.

The Tutor and Student focused on vocal technique, exploring the function of warm-ups, the distinction between chest and head voice, and practicing vocal exercises and scales. They applied these concepts to analyzing and performing sections of "Johnny Be Good," focusing on register transitions, dynamics, and breath control, and also addressed specific vocal challenges in "Don't You Forget About Me" through vocal flip exercises. The session concluded with plans to practice head voice exercises and continue working on vocal flips.
