Kevin - your physics tutor
Physics is a powerful lens through which we see and understand the world around us, but for many students, it initially feels like an intimidating blur of formulas and concepts. In my experience, this difficulty stems from a common misconception that physics is "just another math class." However, physics is better understood as learning a new language, one that requires intuition, interpretation, and careful integration of real-world situations into structured reasoning. My goal as an educator is to demystify this process and to help students build a versatile and reliable approach to problem-solving that will serve them far beyond the classroom. I approach teaching with a three-step strategy. First, I lead guided problem-solving sessions that introduce not just content but the "recipe" for tackling each type of problem. I emphasize recognition of the physical concepts, translation of knowns into symbolic expressions, and above all, making sense of the final answer. Second, students work through problems individually or in small groups, during which I respond to their questions using a Socratic method, posing guiding questions, helping them identify their own mistakes, encouraging critical thinking, and offering praise where it is due to encourage and help build their momentum. Third, I reinforce concepts using visualizations, sketches, and simulations, especially for abstract or counterintuitive topics like angular momentum or magnetic fields. I often employ analogies (e.g., comparing electric current to flowing water) to make the physics feel more tangible and approachable, at least until they build up their experience and are able to tackle more advanced topics where analogies are no longer useful, e.g. quantum mechanics.
