Christian - Know your guitar teacher

Hi I’m Christian, I have a degree in music theory as well as a degree in digital music production. Relating to teaching, I have taught for many of the big schools in town, such as Musicworks and Guitarworks for the last 4+ years. In addition, I have also been playing in many rock country and latin bands over the years and even an orchestra! This wide experience has made me very good at learning material quickly, regardless of genre or difficulty level. I like to make my lessons with specificity in mind, lessons personally tailored to the individual students goals and tastes. Every student learns differently and at different paces, and I like my lessons to reflect that. I do, somewhat paradoxically, have a structure for how the lessons are carried out. The first half of the lesson is an educational concept, and the second half is geared more towards songs. So for example, perhaps in an hour long lessons we spend 20-30 minutes looking at a chord progression and then try to find a song that uses those chords for the last half. This song is selected together with the student so as to be something they enjoy playing, while tempered by the teacher for skill level. So let’s get started having fun learning with our favourite songs!

Student and Tutor focused on foundational guitar techniques, including proper chord fingering, pick usage, and muting. They introduced the A minor pentatonic scale and the theory and application of power chords (5-chords and 4-chords). The session concluded with the student beginning to learn open chords for "Island in the Sun" by Weezer, with a recommendation to practice the chord changes and power chord variations.

The Tutor and Student focused on fundamental guitar techniques, starting with a review of basic finger exercises. They learned and practiced several open chords, including E minor, E major, A minor, and C major, emphasizing correct finger placement and smooth transitions. The session also introduced the PIMA fingerpicking system and applied it in a basic tablature drill, while also touching on note identification on the fretboard and the structure of chords. For homework, the Student was encouraged to practice the introduced chords and fingerpicking, and to listen for songs they might want to learn for the next session.
