I have worked as a Spanish tutor for the past four years. I did mostly in-person sessions but occasionally would tutor remotely via Zoom or Google Meets. I mostly helped local high school students who needed help in their Spanish classes. I have been endorsed by the Spanish department at the high school I went to, and teachers frequently recommend me to students and parents who seek extra help. I have also done independent tutoring during summer and breaks in which I work with the student to see which concepts are most appropriate and necessary to focus on. I try to build good rapport with my clients, especially after meeting them. I sometimes start my tutoring sessions by inviting the student to take a deep breath with me. I find it helps both the student and the tutor clear the mind and enter the headspace for a productive session. I do take the time to check in with my clients, see how they are feeling, ask how school is going, and gather as much information as I can about their Spanish class at school so I can best assist them. I usually ask the student what they feel the need to focus on, or what they are confused by the most. If they do not have a direction, I offer ideas of general grammatical concepts or vocabulary that I know many other students struggle with. Through this brief diagnostic, I am able to figure out what they feel comfortable with and where they need the most support so I can make the most of our limited time together. I try to incorporate real world examples, songs, acronyms, and humor to reinforce the material. I also offer study tips and advice for the student to review the material outside of class and encourage them to seek out Spanish language resources, or if they see Spanish written on a sign somewhere, challenge themselves to try to understand it.
