Not many people actually have their dreams come true, but I am profoundly grateful that I have. As a child, I dreamed of being a singer when I grew up and somehow, it actually happened. I had my first music lesson at the age of six and was still studying well into my forties. For over 15 years I worked as a recording and performing singer-songwriter. And I have taught music for almost 30 years. So singing has not only been my career but also my passion. I have enjoyed every aspect of my work, from private one-on-one students to school groups and choirs. Although I have experience in the majority of genres, my favourites are: folk, classical, pop and musical theatre. As a mature musician, I thrill to discover and train new, unique, young voices as well as share singing’s therapeutic benefits with older ones. Although not always paired with singing, songwriting (especially lyrics) is one of my strengths, having written and recorded two full length CD albums. I have also taught songwriting and facilitated the writing of original, sophisticated songs with singing groups who then performed their pieces. Performance is another one of my strengths and I have helped countless singers to take the stage with greater confidence and professionalism. The human voice is the first and most emotionally expressive instrument as it is already built into our bodies and connected to our figurative hearts. I want to continue to experience the joy of singing and help others to do so for as long as I breathe.

Singing concepts taught by Tanya
The Student and Tutor reviewed previous vocal concepts, including E-range scales, breath dynamics, and head/chest voice transition. They then focused on semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (lip trills, humming, voiced fricatives) to reduce vocal strain and improve high notes in the Student's song. Homework involves practicing these exercises on a specific challenging section of the song, both with a piano and the original recording, emphasizing quality over loudness.

Semiaccluded Vocal Tract Exercises (SOVTEs)
Student and Tutor reviewed fundamental singing concepts including pitch, rhythm, vocal anatomy, and posture. They practiced vocal exercises such as lip trills, tongue trills, and pitch slides, and worked on ear training with specific notes (C, D, E). The session also included selecting and beginning the dissection of a new song, with homework assigned to practice vocal exercises and analyze the song's pitch variations.

They practiced sliding exercises and then the Student performed "Under the Sea." Homework was assigned to mark dynamics and breath points in the song, and to review the article on breath support.
