Mathematics concepts taught by Hope
The session focused on foundational algebra concepts. The Tutor introduced index rules (multiplication, division, powers of powers), simplification of expressions by collecting like terms, and expanding brackets, including rules for multiplying positive and negative numbers. The Student actively practiced these concepts through various examples and problem-solving exercises.
Index Rules (Laws of Exponents)
Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Expanding Brackets (Distributive Property)
Student and Tutor worked through several problems involving the addition of mixed numbers and fractions from a homework sheet. The session focused on methods for converting mixed numbers to improper fractions, finding common denominators, and simplifying final answers. The remaining problems on the sheet were designated for the next session.
Simplifying Fractions to Simplest Form
Adding Mixed Numbers with Different Denominators
Finding a Common Denominator
Converting Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
The Student and Tutor practiced solving equivalent fraction problems, focusing on identifying multiplication factors to find missing numerators and denominators. They worked through a series of exercises on a provided worksheet, successfully completing multiple problems. The next session is planned to cover sums of fractions with mixed numbers.
Introduction to Fractions
Defining Equivalent Fractions
The Golden Rule for Finding Equivalent Fractions
Step-by-Step Equivalent Fraction Calculations
Equivalent Fractions with Large Numbers
Student and Tutor reviewed place value concepts, including ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, millions, and decimal places. They practiced identifying the value of digits in large numbers, reading numbers aloud, and visually representing numbers using place value counters. The Tutor briefly introduced negative numbers and discussed plans to focus on fractions in the upcoming session, aligning with the Student's school curriculum.
Place Value Chart (Whole Numbers & Decimals)
Identifying the Value of a Digit
Representing and Reading Large Numbers
Number Partitioning (Additive)
The Tutor and Student reviewed fundamental math concepts, starting with fractions and progressing to multiplication and division. They practiced converting improper fractions, adding mixed numbers, performing multi-digit multiplication, and long division. The student identified estimation, math riddles, and word problems as areas for future focus.
