Adam - Get to know your vocal coach
I'm Adam, a singing teacher, performer, and voice coach with 5+ years of experience helping singers build confidence, improve technique, and discover a voice that feels natural, healthy, and expressive. My background combines professional performance with evidence-based voice training. I have trained with Estill Voice International. Alongside teaching, I work as a performer and have extensive experience in musical theatre, live performance, and vocal coaching. This means I understand not only how the voice works technically, but also the realities of auditions, rehearsals, performances, and singing under pressure. My teaching style is friendly, supportive, and tailored to the individual. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every voice is different, and every student has their own goals, strengths, and challenges. Whether you're a complete beginner, an experienced singer preparing for auditions, or someone returning to singing after a break, I aim to create a relaxed, fun environment where you can develop confidently and at your own pace. Patience, encouragement, and clear communication are at the heart of my teaching. I enjoy helping students understand why exercises work rather than simply copying sounds. My goal is to give you practical tools you can use independently between lessons, leading to lasting progress. Most importantly, I believe singing should be enjoyable. Technical development matters, but great singing comes from combining skill with confidence, creativity, and genuine expression. Whether your goal is performing professionally, preparing for an audition, building confidence, or simply singing for enjoyment, I'd love to help you achieve it.

Singing concepts taught by Adam
The Student and Tutor worked on vocal performance and diction across three songs: "You Can Have Her, I Don't Want Her," "Fast Car," and "Brown Eyed Girl." They focused on improving vocal freedom, maintaining rhythmic accuracy by emphasizing key words, and refining tongue position for open vowel sounds using a specific exercise. The Student was assigned to practice the exaggerated tongue-out exercise for the 'U' vowel.

Student and Tutor addressed vocal recovery after a recent illness, focusing on gentle warm-ups and identifying vocal tension. They then worked on advanced singing techniques, including maintaining an open mouth for fluid phrasing and controlling larynx position for better resonance. The session concluded with specific homework assignments for vocal exercises and mental pitch matching to improve pitch accuracy.

Precision Pitch: Mental Pitch Matching (Prephonatory Tuning)
The Student and Tutor worked on vocal warm-ups and practiced two songs, "My All" and "A Leak In This Old Building," focusing on breath control, vocal tone, and lyric articulation. They discussed techniques for sustaining breath during runs and producing a light, non-breathy sound. Homework involves daily singing for enjoyment, incorporating tongue exercises, and practicing songs as a mini-performance to enhance audience connection.

Performance Focus: Connection Over Perfection
The Student and Tutor discussed the comfort and resonance of singing in different keys, introducing a new song, "Dark-Eyed Gal." The Tutor explained vocal resonance through a trumpet analogy and guided the Student through exercises to consciously control larynx position for better sound production, particularly for higher notes. The Student was advised to practice these techniques and prioritize hydration and rest due to feeling unwell.

The Student and Tutor continued their work on singing techniques, specifically focusing on advanced breath control for sustained vocal lines. They practiced applying new breathing methods, such as relaxed lower-belly breathing and intentional exhalation during pauses, to two selected songs. The Tutor also provided strategies to manage performance anxiety through conscious breath regulation and assigned specific stretching and vocal exercises for homework.

The Student and Tutor practiced several songs, including 'Amarillo by Morning,' 'Tennessee Stud,' 'Bees,' and 'Sounds of Silence,' focusing on vocal techniques such as breath control, legato, enunciation, and emotional delivery. They discussed strategies for managing vocal tension during performance and explored methods for blending harmonies with other singers. As homework, the Student was advised to practice songs at half tempo with a metronome to identify and address areas of vocal tension.
