Eli - Know your guitar teacher

My teaching style for guitar is patient, encouraging, and focused on helping students enjoy the process of learning music. I like to adapt lessons to each student’s goals, whether they want to learn songs they love, improve technique, or understand music theory in a practical way. I focus on building confidence through simple, clear steps while keeping lessons fun and motivating. I also believe learning guitar should feel creative and rewarding, not stressful, so I aim to create a relaxed environment where students can grow at their own pace. I enjoy teaching in a way that connects music to real-life expression and creativity. Instead of only memorizing exercises, I encourage students to develop rhythm, ear training, and the ability to play confidently with feeling. Because I speak both English and Spanish and have experience learning languages and music myself, I understand the importance of patience and communication when learning something new. My goal is to help students not only become better guitar players, but also build a lifelong appreciation for music. Fun, patient guitar teacher focused on confidence, creativity, and real musical growth. I help students learn songs they love while building strong fundamentals step by step.

Guitar concepts taught by Eli

Student learned 1 day ago

Student and Tutor reviewed guitar chords for previous songs and were introduced to the theoretical concept of the G major key and its associated chord functions. They practiced the "four-chord magic" progression in both open and power chord forms and learned two new songs, focusing on chord transitions and strumming techniques. The Tutor recommended purchasing a capo and picks, and discussed future topics like lead guitar and the pentatonic scale.

The Student and Tutor explored advanced guitar theory concepts, including chromatic passing tones, the enclosure method, and dynamic resolution through guide tones, all aimed at enhancing soloing and chord transitions. The Student practiced these techniques on the guitar with various chord progressions and discussed assignments like using a looper for isolated drills and practicing 'blind resolution' to improve improvisation and timing.

The Tutor and Student focused on fundamental guitar skills, beginning with tuning the instrument and reinforcing the importance of proper preparation. The Student then learned a simplified two-finger power chord shape and successfully practiced a recognizable riff, which was provided as a numerical sequence for homework. They discussed the importance of consistent practice to overcome initial finger pain and build skill.

The Student and Tutor reviewed previously learned guitar techniques, including the staccato method and chord transitions. They then learned new chords and practiced progressions for three different songs: 'Gun to My Head,' 'Creep,' and 'I'll Remember Tonight,' with a focus on efficient transitions and fingering techniques. The Tutor also introduced the concept of a capo for simplifying bar chords, and homework involves practicing the new chord progressions and transitions for the learned songs.

The tutor and student reviewed seventh chord construction and then explored practical application in jazz rhythm guitar. They focused on three-part shell voicings, supportive ensemble playing, and introduced advanced techniques like harp-like cascades and crossing trills. The student was encouraged to practice these techniques and apply them in jam sessions.
