French isn’t just grammar and vocabulary; it’s literature, film, cuisine, history, and diverse francophone cultures.

I am Chanel VUGUZIGA. For two consecutive years I volunteered as a French language teacher at a community learning center, an experience that profoundly shaped my understanding of language education and community engagement. My role involved planning and delivering weekly classes to a diverse group of learners—teenagers preparing for school exams, adult immigrants seeking conversational skills, and older adults keen to explore a new language for travel and cultural interest. The variety of learners demanded flexibility, patience, and a broad toolkit of teaching strategies. At the outset I conducted a needs assessment to identify learners’ goals and language levels. This informed my lesson planning: I designed modular lessons that integrated grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each session had clear objectives, a brief warm-up to activate prior knowledge, a focused presentation of new material, interactive practice, and a communicative activity to consolidate learning. One of the most rewarding aspects was adapting instruction for multilingual and multicultural learners. I learned to build on cognates and learners’ existing languages, scaffold new grammar with clear examples, and foster a supportive classroom culture where mistakes were treated as learning opportunities. This volunteer teaching role strengthened my classroom management, lesson-planning, and interpersonal skills. It taught me to be responsive, creative, and outcome-oriented while remaining compassionate and patient. Witnessing learners gain fluency and confidence was deeply motivating, and the experience has inspired me to pursue further work in language education and community-based teaching initiatives.
