Mary Jean - Know your tutor

I am an online Mathematics tutor with a Diploma on Master of Arts in Mathematics Education with specialization in Secondary School teaching has been teaching for a face to face classroom setup for almost a decade now. I have taught in Elementary teaching 1st, 2nd and 5th grade as Mathematics teacher for 2 years and currently, I am a Mathematics teacher handling 7th and 8th grade. My expertise lies in teaching Algebra, Geometry, Probability and the likes. I have also an experience tutoring Mathematics and ELA for Elementary and Middle schoolers from LATAM. Althroughout my teaching, I have been an advocate of learner-centered designing personalized instruction for students with varies learning interests. I am flexible in terms of pacing based on students learning capabilities. The use if interactive tools such as whiteboards, online quizzes, graphing tools, video and gamified learning is also one of my expertise. This will help learners feel more excited and motivated in learning. I make it a point that lessons are concretize by applying them in real life situations. I guide learners instead of dominating the lesson. If students are facing difficulty, I break lessons into pieces to make sure that mastery of the lesson is achieved.

The session focused on applying operations on rational numbers, specifically fractions and mixed numbers, to solve various word problems. The Student practiced addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, learning to identify key operational clues and relevant information within problem statements. The next session is planned to cover divisibility rules and the conversion between fractions and decimals.

The session focused on teaching the laws of exponents, including the product rule, quotient rule, power of a power rule, negative exponent law, and zero exponent law. The Student practiced applying these rules through numerous examples and an online game. The Tutor mentioned that scientific notation would be the topic for the next meeting.

Student and Tutor covered the definition of rational numbers, along with detailed practice on comparing and ordering fractions. The core of the session focused on performing all four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—with both similar and dissimilar fractions, introducing methods like LCD, butterfly, and cross-cancellation. The upcoming session will include a review of divisibility rules.

The session involved a comprehensive diagnostic test in mathematics covering whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, PEMDAS, geometry, and word problems. The Student practiced a wide array of basic mathematical skills, and the Tutor provided instruction on specific areas like dissimilar fraction operations and decimal-to-fraction conversion. Future sessions will focus on reinforcing these identified areas, preparing the Student for middle school topics, specifically starting with ratios and proportions.
