Owen Your chemistry tutor
My name is Owen, and as a Neuroscience major at UNC with a 3.9 GPA, I’ve learned that success comes from mastering the fundamentals and truly playing with the problems until they make sense. Whether you are battling Gen Chem or diving into Organic or biochemistry, I believe that anything is possible when it comes to your learning. I was taught by the UNC learning center in upper level education classes on a style of teaching that is about asking questions and helping whomever I work with push forward and figure out the answers to help reinforce their own learning. Whether that is working on homework problems, or if you need extra help and would like me to do a little extra work to put together some practice problems to tackle some key concepts, I can do it all. I also have plenty of resources from the past that helped me succeed. I currently am starting dental school at the University of Michigan, ranked number one in the country. I have extensive experience with standardized testing, whether that be the MCAT or the DAT, OAT, and other science based examinations, I am always happy to help with both guidance and improvement on scores. I strongly believe that any subject can be enjoyable, and I have tutored in 13 subjects, from neuroscience or Chinese to biology, and I would say chemistry is by far one of my favorite subjects, especially learning the foundations of organic chemistry or general chemistry, as those are imperative to the future.

Chemistry concepts taught by Owen
The student and tutor worked through problems related to chemical kinetics and redox reactions. They practiced calculating activation energy and the pre-exponential factor using the Arrhenius equation and then delved into the detailed steps of balancing complex redox reactions, including identifying oxidation states, writing half-reactions, and balancing ionic and molecular equations in acidic conditions. They planned to practice similar problems in a future session.
Arrhenius Equation and Activation Energy
Spectator Ions in Molecular Equations
Balancing Redox Reactions in Acidic and Basic Solutions
Determining Oxidation Numbers
The Student and Tutor worked through problems related to oxidation-reduction reactions, Gibbs Free Energy and spontaneity, and chemical kinetics, including rate laws and the Arrhenius equation. They practiced balancing redox reactions, calculating thermodynamic values, and interpreting kinetic data from graphs. The Tutor plans to find more practice problems on balancing half-reactions for the next session.
Chemical Kinetics: Reaction Order and Rate Laws
The Arrhenius Equation and Activation Energy
Gibbs Free Energy and Spontaneity
Oxidation-Reduction (Redox) Reactions and Half-Reactions
The tutor and student worked through a practice exam covering topics in chemistry, including acid-base theory (Bronsted-Lowry), pH calculations, properties of explosives, oxidation states, redox reactions, entropy, thermodynamics (Gibbs Free Energy), kinetics (rate laws), and buffer systems. They practiced identifying conjugate pairs, calculating pH, predicting entropy changes, and understanding spontaneity. The next session is planned to finish the review and cover additional student-submitted questions.

and the Water Equilibrium
The class reviewed gas laws, including the combined gas law and the Kelvin scale, and practiced solving related problems. The session then explored the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of particle speeds and the relationship between kinetic energy, mass, and velocity, using graphs and equations to illustrate these concepts.
The Combined Gas Law
Kinetic Energy and Molecular Motion
Maxwell-Boltzmann Distribution
The Student and Tutor worked through problems requiring dimensional analysis, including unit conversions for toxicity calculations and rate conversions. They practiced setting up and solving complex multi-step conversions to arrive at desired units, and planned to continue practicing these skills in future sessions.
Dimensional Analysis (Railroad Tracks)
Unit Prefixes: The Scale of Measurement
Molar Mass and Concentration Calculations
The student and tutor reviewed concepts related to the kinetic theory of gases, including pressure, temperature, and their relationships with molecular motion. They practiced identifying independent, dependent, and controlled variables in gas experiments and analyzed the behavior of gases in both flexible and non-flexible containers. The session also touched upon expressing these relationships algebraically and understanding molecular-level explanations for gas behavior.
