Yafet - Know your tutor

I’ve been tutoring for over six years, working primarily with middle and high school students in mathematics. I began in 9th grade during COVID by organizing small community tutoring sessions to help students stay on track while schools were closed. Since then, I’ve continued tutoring both in-person and online, supporting students in Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, and introductory Calculus. Most of my experience has been one-on-one, which has allowed me to personalize lessons based on each student’s strengths and gaps. I’ve helped students improve their grades, prepare for exams, and, most importantly, build confidence in their abilities. I focus on breaking down complex topics into clear, manageable steps and creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning from mistakes.

Class overview

My teaching approachis centered on clarity, structure, and adaptability. I start by understanding how the student thinks. Before correcting mistakes, I ask them to walk me through their reasoning so I can identify where the confusion begins. This helps me address the root issue rather than just fixing surface errors. From there, I break concepts into smaller, manageable steps and connect new material to what they already know. I focus on building conceptual understanding first, then reinforcing it with guided practice. I use questions intentionally so students stay actively engaged instead of passively watching me solve problems. I also adjust my pacing based on the student’s responses. If they demonstrate strong understanding, we increase the level of challenge. If they’re unsure, we slow down and revisit foundational skills. Throughout the process, I prioritize creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and building confidence as they improve.
