Willa - Get to know your vocal coach

As a classically trained singer and actor, I focus on healthful singing and engaging performance. I believe in building a strong foundation of proper technique to ensure the health and longevity of the singing voice, which we build upon to develop personal style and explore different genres and characters. I specialise in musical theatre, classical, jazz, folk, and pop music. If you would like to explore a variety of genres and styles, I'm the teacher for you! I also offer the ear training and tutoring in music theory to become a more skilled and flexible musician. What matters most are your goals. Do you want to focus on technique and musicianship? Perfect! Do you want to become a more confident singer and performer? Awesome! Do you want to just have fun and learn a new skill? Amazing! The voice is a fascinating instrument - no two singers sound exactly the same, even singing the same song! Learning to sing is about discovering the unique characteristics of your voice and using them to bring the music to life - and to learn how to make YOU shine through the music you make.

Singing lessons highlights

A "standard lesson" would start with a light warm up with a focus on proper technique - breath, vowels, placement, avoiding excess tension, etc. We would then move on to song work, which involves learning the song, either from sheet music or by ear (depending on preference), identifying difficult areas and troubleshooting them, and discovering personal flair. If desired, I also offer tutoring in ear training/musicianship and music theory. This can be made a chunk of the lesson at the beginning or end, the entire lesson, and/or can spattered throughout. The "standard lesson" is a only a starting point. Everyone learns differently, and over time we'll adjust the format to your wants and needs - more focus on technique, or song learning, or performance tweaks, or ear training, are all welcome adjustments. Lessons are about taking what is special about you as a singer and enhancing it, not about forcing you into a box.
