Melody - Your piano teacher

I am a dedicated piano educator with a diverse international background, having taught students across China and Canada in both in-person and online settings. My teaching philosophy is rooted in a high level of technical excellence, having successfully completed the RCM Level 10 curriculum. What sets my instruction apart is the integration of The Royal Conservatory’s Smart Start principles, which utilize specific Activity Prototypes—such as Audiation, Cognitive Flexibility, and Transfer to Instruments—to accelerate musical development through scientifically backed cognitive skills. As a licensed Early Childhood Educator, I specialize in making complex musical concepts accessible and engaging for young learners, ensuring that every lesson is developmentally appropriate and fosters a lifelong love for music. Whether you are a beginner starting with Faber’s My First Piano Adventure or an advanced student preparing for RCM examinations, I provide a structured, supportive, and cognitively enriching environment to help you reach your full musical potential

Piano lessons at a glance

My teaching method is a specialized blend of high-level technical training and research-based cognitive development, specifically tailored for students in the Canadian music education landscape. By combining the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) standards with the *Smart Start cognitive framework*, I ensure students develop not just physical dexterity, but deep musical intelligence. 1. The Cognitive Framework (Smart Start) I integrate specific "Activity Prototypes" from the Royal Conservatory's research to build foundational brain skills. My lessons focus on: Attention & Perception:, Cognitive Flexibility: Audition: 2. Developmental Age-Pathways (Faber Method) As a licensed Early Childhood Educator, I select curriculum paths that match a child's developmental stage to maximize their "Working Memory" and motor skills: Young Beginners (Ages 5–6):I use **My First Piano Adventure (Book A)**, Older Beginners (Ages 11+): I utilize the *Accelerated Piano Adventure*track to respect the student's faster cognitive processing and provide more mature-sounding repertoire. Intermediate Students: I bridge the gap between Faber and RCM, using Faber's "Developing Artist" literature to prepare for formal examinations. 3. Professional Certification Focus (RCM) As an RCM Level 10 trained instructor, my goal is to guide students through the national certificate system: Standardized Benchmarking:Aligning weekly lessons with RCM levels (e.g., Faber Level 3B maps to RCM Grade 1 preparation) so students can earn high school credits and official certificates. Performance Science:Teaching "Transfer to Instruments" techniques where students move Own Melody" sessions to encourage cognitive flexibility and personal expression.

Piano concepts taught by Melody

Student learned about 2 months ago

The Tutor introduced basic music theory, chords, and rhythm on the piano, relating it to beat-making. The Student practiced identifying notes and rhythms, also starting to read music notation. For follow up, the Student was encouraged to practice playing with both hands and download a metronome app; and next lesson they will focus on structured reading practice, learning songs, and refining technique.
