Sophia - Your piano teacher
I have educated students from the age of 3 to adulthood in classical and jazz piano repertoire, mixing both study materials that I recommend and pieces that they are passionate learning and have a goal to learn. I work with students in technique through teaching them scales, arpeggios, rhythm, and pedal exercises to build foundations and advance their musicality. For students interested in developing performance skills, I help register them for national piano programs where they can compete and evaluate their playing through judges examinations, specifically through the National Piano Guild. This process involves teaching student students to memorize their pieces over a course of half a year to a year, and also build the required techniques for their level. Over the last decade of tutoring students, I have learned to tailor lessons to each student’s needs and goals. I help the students set both short term and long-term goals for their piano playing, to help them achieve the skills and techniques that they want to improve on.

Piano lessons at a glance
My personalized tutoring approach focuses on developing both technical skill and musical repertoire. Each lesson begins with technical exercises and a brief review of the lesson plan, followed by a discussion of how the student’s practice week went and which areas need the most attention moving forward. We then work through the student’s assigned pieces together, focusing on note reading, technique, rhythm, and musical expression, with the emphasis adjusted to the student’s current level and stage of learning for each piece. I adapt my teaching to meet the student where they are, ensuring steady and realistic progress. At the end of each lesson, I set clear goals for the following week, including targeted practice objectives. This may involve assigning specific metronome tempos, new scales or arpeggios, and other exercises designed to address the student’s individual needs and strengthen weak areas. When a student is preparing for an examination or competition, I shift the lesson focus toward performance readiness. I simulate real performance conditions by having the student play their repertoire back-to-back without interruption, followed by detailed feedback. This approach helps build stamina, confidence, and the ability to perform under pressure. I also reference examination scoring criteria and track the student’s progress week by week, clearly communicating how close each piece is to performance-level readiness.
