Greg - Know your guitar teacher
My teaching style is a "Door of Creativity" for you to enter so that you can more fully appreciate yourself and express yourself more fully through your instrument. It might be for a short time, or maybe a long time. I don't have all the "answers"; but I see myself as a resource to guide you in your quest to use the guitar as a tool (or instrument) to help you go where you want to go and communicate what you need to communicate! If you practice hard enough, you may eventually find yourself in a position of power, where people are drawn to your performance. Hopefully, your practice + hard work will = this natural response to your invested time. It's important to know what you want, but it might also be a good idea to be open to some suggestions from teachers and others who know music and "the basics" from not only school, but from "real life". I think, in the beginning, it might be wise to approach the guitar from a purely "mechanical" perspective. This is because, I think most musicians tend toward being "emotional". Being emotional doesn't really require hard work; but mastering your instrument, mechanically speaking, does. So that approach takes the emotions out of the equation and simplifies everything. Keep in mind the wealth of resources now available to aspiring Guitarists! Youtube is an invaluable resource and can definitely be used in countless ways. Don't limit yourself to just one "Teacher" or "Resource"! Use everything that's available to you!!! Wishing you all the Best!!!!! Greg
