Charis - Get to know your vocal coach
I’m Charis Grant, a dedicated vocal instructor with over three years of experience teaching one-on-one singing lessons to students of various ages and skill levels. Through private instruction, I’ve helped singers develop healthy vocal technique, improve pitch and tone, strengthen breath control, and build confidence in their unique sound. I strongly believe in personalized teaching, and I tailor each lesson to the individual student’s goals, learning style, and musical interests. Alongside private lessons, I have extensive ensemble leadership experience. I served as the a cappella director of the UMBC Stilettos, an all-female a cappella group, for two years. In this role, I led rehearsals, taught harmonies, refined vocal blend, and helped singers build musical independence and confidence within an ensemble setting. I was also the assistant director for my Jubilee/Gospel choir for one year, supporting sectional rehearsals, vocal coaching, and performance preparation. In addition, I taught and led the adult choir at my church for two years, working with singers of varying experience levels to create a unified, confident sound. Through my Jubilee choir, I’ve had the opportunity to travel and perform internationally, including tours to Paris and Prague, with an upcoming trip to St. Thomas in March and plans to travel to Ghana next year. These experiences have strengthened my musicality, cultural awareness, and performance skills, all of which I bring into my teaching. My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and judgment-free, with a strong emphasis on growth, confidence, and expressive, healthy singing.

Singing lessons highlights
My teaching methods are centered on creating a supportive, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable exploring their voice while building strong technical foundations. I believe that every voice is unique, so I begin by assessing each student’s current skill level, goals, and musical interests. From there, I design lessons that are personalized and flexible, allowing students to progress at a pace that feels both challenging and achievable. I focus heavily on healthy vocal technique, including proper breath support, posture, resonance, and vocal placement, to ensure long-term vocal health. Ear training is a core part of my teaching approach, especially for students interested in harmony, a cappella, or choir singing. I help students develop strong listening skills, pitch accuracy, and the ability to blend and match tone with others. I also incorporate warm-ups and exercises that build control, range, and stamina in a way that feels practical and accessible. In lessons, I balance structure with creativity. While technique is essential, I also encourage emotional expression and confidence in performance. I often use repertoire that aligns with a student’s interests so learning feels engaging and relevant. My approach is patient, clear, and judgment-free, and I emphasize consistent growth rather than perfection. My goal is for students to leave lessons not only singing better, but understanding their voice, trusting themselves, and enjoying the process of learning.
