Maria - Know your tutor

Hi, my name is Maria Khan, and I recently earned my Bachelor’s degree in Child and Adolescent Development. Working with children has always felt natural to me, and my education has deepened my understanding of how they learn, grow, and thrive. My goal as an online tutor is simple: I want learning to be engaging, interactive, and fun, so students don’t just complete assignments they fall in love with school again. One of my biggest passions is helping children enjoy math. Too many students start to believe they’re “just not good at math,” which can make the subject frustrating or intimidating. I enjoy breaking concepts into manageable steps, using real-life examples, and making lessons interactive. When a child finally understands something they once struggled with, I love seeing their confidence grow and that excitement carries over to other areas of learning. I also have hands-on experience as an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist, working one-on-one with children who have diverse learning and behavioral needs. This taught me patience, structure, and positive reinforcement strategies, as well as how to keep kids focused and engaged. Most importantly, I learned how to connect with each child, celebrate small wins, and create a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks. I understand that focus and attention are about more than just asking children to pay attention. Lessons need to be interactive, appropriately challenging, and responsive to each child’s learning style. I use visuals, active questioning, movement breaks when needed, and creative problem-solving to keep students engaged. I also encourage a growth mindset, helping students see mistakes as opportunities to learn rather than failures.

Class overview

I use interactive, hands-on teaching methods designed to make learning engaging, fun, and meaningful. I love incorporating whiteboards to visualize concepts, games and challenges to make lessons exciting, and real-life examples that connect learning to everyday life. I adapt each session to a student’s individual interests, strengths, and learning style, so they stay actively involved and motivated throughout. Drawing from my experience as an ABA therapist, I use strategies that help children maintain focus and attention, including structured routines, positive reinforcement, and interactive activities that encourage participation. I celebrate small wins, encourage questions, and help students see mistakes as opportunities to learn rather than setbacks. I also strive to foster a growth mindset, so students feel confident tackling new challenges and realize that effort and practice lead to improvement. My goal is to make each session not only educational but enjoyable, inspiring curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning. By combining creativity, structure, and personalization, I aim to create lessons where students feel proud of their progress, excited to engage, and empowered to reach their full potential.
